This is a pretty good work out for beginners, advanced yoga-ers will probably be bored with it. I love how he makes the focus breathing, that's always something I have trouble with when I work out, especially with yoga/pilates. The reminders to breathe aren't too annoying either. I would definitely recommend for the beginner-intermediate levels. :)

Great yoga workout! - J. Hahn - NY, NY
I totally loved this workout - both the 25 and 45 minute yoga sessions were great. I also love the extras (i.e., mixed martial arts) and use them all the time too! All the workouts are perfect for mixing up with my gym time. I definitely recommend this for a buy or a present for the holidays.

The two yoga workouts on this DVD are good, but pretty basic. I like Kurt Johnson's instruction but some of the flow from pose to pose felt a little awkward. There are two routines, one 25 minute and one 45 minute. I would have liked a full 30 minute routine and an hour long routine. The two routines felt very similar and I would have liked a little more variety between the two. Overall a decent DVD for the money.

This was by far one of the best yoga workouts I've ever had. I love that they have a 45 minute workout and a 25 minute one. Typically yoga DVDs only have one long workout. The 2 different routines are awesome depending on how much time you have and they both offer a great workout that is relaxing at the same time!

Why Breathing Correctly is So Important in Yoga and in Life

Many people don't realize how important breath is to life. Breathing is so natural that it is beneath our conscious notice. Yet how you breathe affects your health. For example, when you are upset or stressed it's common to take rapid, shallow breaths. When you are breathing shallowly and rapidly you don't get enough oxygen into your body. Without the proper amount of oxygen people can feel light-headed, sleepy, or dizzy. The human body doesn't operate properly without enough oxygen, but most people don't get enough oxygen on a day to day basis to keep them in good health.

Scientists and doctors have shown that the way you breathe can have a serious impact on your mental state as well as your physical state. It's been proven that just a few minutes of deep breathing can help people to calm down when they are angry or upset. Deep breathing can also help people who are depressed. When you breathe deeply and fill your body with oxygen your circulation improves and your brain releases endorphins, which induce a sense of peace and well-being. So if you're feeling sad or depressed and you spend a few minutes breathing properly you will feel better instantly.

But when your breathing is shallow and quick instead of deep and long you will begin to feel worse. You aren't getting enough oxygen into your body and you also are not getting rid of the carbon dioxide your body produces. When that carbon dioxide starts to build up you will start to feel ill because carbon dioxide is a waste product. Deep inhalation and then deep exhalation will help the body rid itself of the toxic carbon dioxide and replenish it with oxygen and you will feel better.

It's not necessary to spend thousands of dollars every month on supplements and over the counter drugs to feel better. You can start feeling better immediately if you become more aware of your breathing and you consciously make time to breathe deeply and help your body cleanse itself everyday. Just sitting down for a few minutes to center yourself and take long deep breaths will do you a world of good.

There are many forms of Yoga, and all of them have evolved over the centuries to meet the needs of people. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, is a classical text, which was written by Swami Svatmarama. Within its pages, Swami Svatmarama discusses dietary suggestions.

The foundation of the Yogic diet (Sattvic diet) is moderation. Yet, every New Year starts with a parade of fad of diets. By the middle of the year, the voice of reason comes back to moderation and the Yogic diet quietly takes its place of honor, even if someone changes the name.

So, what does the Yogic diet consist of? The Yogic diet, mentioned by Swami Svatmarama, contains a balanced combination of whole grain breads, vegetables, fruit, nuts, whole grains, legumes, and dairy products. Please bear in mind that allergies can eliminate, or change, the consumption of these foods. There are also low-fat choices for dairy products, which were not available in Swami Svatmarama's time.

Whenever, a Yoga teacher is interviewed about the effects of Yoga, discussion of the Yogic diet is generally ignored. The media wants to know about physical feats of strength. Hence, Yoga has developed labels. For example: Vinyasa Yoga has also become known as Power Yoga. This is not a bad thing, but maybe this repackaging of names would help people to realize the voice of reason, in dieting, has been around for a long time. Maybe we should call the Sattvic diet, "The Secret Yoga Diet." We know it is not a secret, but changing the label will help millions of people to eat correctly, while living a healthy, happy, and longer life.

STOTT PILATES: Advanced Matwork, 3rd ed. Review



I have been using Stott Pilates workouts for over 7 years.

I have both the 2nd and 3rd. edition of Stott's advanced Matwork. I purchased the 3rd because I wore out the VHS cassette on the 2nd.

I love the sequencing of the stott system it is much easier on my back then the Classical Pilates although I still do use both for variety. And the Classical Pilates has some advanced and super advanced movements that the Stott does not have.

I gave it 4 stars because I prefer the 2nd edition to the 3rd. The warm up and the after workout stretch are better. Also Moria takes you through the maximum recommended reps as opposed to the minimum.

To make it better they should use the DVD features (skipping chapters) to shorten or lengthen the workout and maybe print pointers on the screen to allow the user to turn off the commentary.

Stott Pilates Advanced Matt - Leslie Jones -
The instruction on this DVD is excellent, the exercizes are challenging and it is well produced. I find the instructor's voice terribly annoying, to the point that I have to turn the audio off. This is a difinite drawback since I still need help with technique. Other than that, I think most people would like this DVD.

Yoga Radiance Review



This is a good workout, but it does expect you to know the basics going in. They do not give you the names of the poses most of the time and they don't spell out how to do them, though there is a basic talk-through. I like this, since it gets the narrator out of the way for all but the most necessary cues, but if you need things spelled out, it will be frustrating.

Also, it is important toknow your limits,some of the asinas are tricky and they don't give modifications, so give yourself time and don't be a hero,just do what you can and work your way up. Also, for the love of your back and everything breakable in your living room, if you can't already do a headstand practice up against a wall at the beginning! And just go straight up if you need to, don't worry about doing a straddle split right away. If you keep these things in mind, this is a great DVD that will give an intermediate beginner lots of room to grow and improve, which I love since there's nothing more annoying to me than buying a disk and being bored three months later because it's all too easy now.

The only thing that kind of bugged me was the fact that the instructors are very scantily dressed and there is something about some of the camera shots that felt distinctly, well, porn-ish. It wasn't bad enough to be overly distracting, it was mostly just moments of, "Really? That's a bit... unnecessary." It almost feels like the goal was to entertain the husbands while the wives do their workout or something. Like I said, though, it isn't too bad and once I started focusing on doing the movements I didn't really notice anymore.

Great disc for advanced beginners - Dani Montlake - Jerusalem
I got this disc when I was a real beginner, and I found it fascinating and challenging. Now, a few years later, I see it as an intermediate level, classic yoga disc for when I have only 1 hour our less. If you skip the lunar sequence, you can get a decent work out in only 49 minutes!

You hit all the major poses (warrior 1 and 2, standing splits, half moon, back bends, head stands, triangle, etc.) plus a couple others like bird of paradise. There is no real core sequence though. However, the work out is quick and even good enough to make you sweat a bit.

The commentary is pretty straight-forward: no interesting metaphors or comments about life. While I usually find this annoying, I don't on this disc. The commentator's voice is nice and soothing. Music is gentle and interesting too. Filmed in the Yoga Loft in NYC, there is not a whole lot going on with the scenery, but it is clean and straight forward. If you are an advanced beginner this is a fantastic disc. After years of growing with this disc in my practice, I find that I still reach for it once or twice a month when I am short on time or sick of everything else.

One of the few yoga videos I have found that makes me sweat while maintaining its integrity as a -yoga- video, versus a "yoga" video that is more like a fitness tape that uses some yoga poses.

I do wish they would hold some of the poses for longer though and I don't like how it is broken up into five segments because I usually stop before I get to the fourth one since I am tired and I know it is quite difficult. I think it should be 1 segment and then the last segment (the lunar flow) should be its own segment.



peaceful practice for a versed yogi - Mme Meliss - Pretty Paris
This dvd is pleasant to practice with. The music doesn't get in the way, the instructors are beautiful, and the voice-over is zen. I enjoyed the vigerous vinyasa sequences and the fact that there wasn't a lot of repetition. Poses like headstand, shoulderstand, and lotus may be too challenging for a less experienced yogi.

The dvd is divided into four seasons as well as a very short lunar flow. I like to do all four together for a longer practice, nearly an hour, or use the gentle lunar flow for days when I'm not feeling up to the intensity of a full practice. Yoga Radiance incorporates many poses into a concise practice. I reccommend this dvd to confident intermediate and advanced practitioners.

I keep thinking I'd like the toning benefits of yoga, but I find yoga a bit of a bore, what with holding all those poses and getting in touch with my mind and/or body and all that. But I keep trying different workouts hoping one will inspire me.

Well, this one finally did! Yoga Slim doesn't feature endless sun salutations; instead, the instructor sticks mostly with Warrior 1 and Warrior 2 poses in which she "flows" back and forth from lunging/stretching over the front knee to lifting/stretching over the back straight leg. There were some other forward lunges as well in which she kept the arms in constant motion, both up over head, then floating down to circle in front of you into prayer position. The constant motion was a nice fusion of toning and stretching.

After about 40 minutes of different flowing moves, we move down to the floor for about five minutes of plank work for the core (midsection.) These hurt my toes, so next time I am going to substitute either push-ups or crunches. After this is a V-E-R-Y nice 10 minute relaxation segment, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I felt that I had gotten a good, moderate toning workout, and I'm sure I will reach for this DVD again and again!

Not Really Yoga - Lori - Albuquerque, NM
I will not blame P.J. for my not liking this DVD at all, which is why I still gave it three stars, but the description presented by Natural Journeys is totally incorrect. I am an intermediate yoga instructor and there is really not any yoga here. There is a very slow, breathy, stretch. Yes she does incorporate the following poses: modifed triangle, tree, warrior one and two, but that is it!! Not even a downward dog. The stretching was so slow that I wouldn't even use the DVD for a good stretch. The slowness of it would put me to sleep. Just be aware of that before you buy it. It may be right for you but I am selling it first chance I get.






Cardio yoga - Lena, LMT - Nassau, NY
This is set indoors on a small stage/room w/2 backup women, one serving as a modifier. The production value is professional, the music is very low & hardly helps. PJ has a great demeanor, is calming & relaxing. She has a great mind/body workout.
That said, this workout has a lot of repetition of going in/out of a single pose so that there is very little time for a variety of moves seeming to teach the absolute beginner. She also gives a lot of instruction & very little calming time. She cues YOUR left/right & reminds you of proper posture/breathing which is great.
That said, you will bend in/out of warrior 1, 2 & chair separately many times. There is a lot of holding the arms up to work the arms/shoulders. There is a nice amount of single leg balancing w/a walk in the beginning. There wasn't much time for much else but this alone is a great workout.

This is great for those new to yoga or those who don't want a spiritual workout.



More of a Yoga Stretch than a Yoga Slim - fit girl -
This workout was not what I would call a calorie burner; in fact, it is one of the less challenging Yoga DVDs I have used. I found Self Magazine's "Destress Yoga" required more exertion than this routine. That being said, the instruction is fairly detailed, and the pace is one that a beginner would feel comfortable with. This is really a Yoga Stretch routine, with one short walk portion that she calls cardio. The DVD is decent, but forgettable. I also found the intructor's repeated use of the work "awesome" a bit annoying, and wished that the two other exercises would smile from time to time. They look as if they feel they are being punished.

As a yoga practitioner I have watched over a hundred yoga DVDs and own over fifty. This is one of the best I have seen, the postures are accurate, beautifully executed, and accurately explained. The instructor is very clear in her descriptions and instruction, also she is very lovely. The setting (a Cape Cod Beach) couldn't be a more serine place to practice yoga. The photography is excellent and that exquisitely played flute and wind chime music is perfect for a calming focused mood. Good Work Dianne.

Excellent Restorative Hatha Yoga!!!!! - SUNDARI - FLORIDA
I found this Hatha Yoga workout to be restorative. It relaxes all tension from the body and mind. It relieves stress & anxiety. The sequence of postures is relaxing and an invigorating moving meditation. This is a balanced Hatha Yoga practice. The scenery is a beautiful natural Cape Cod beach setting. The instructor's voice is serene. She also has a background in stress reduction. Making this a perfect workout for people with high stress lives.

Diane does a great job rejuvenating my mind, body, and soul. The narrative is very well executed as well as the actual yoga positions. The process and positions are in a naturally ascending order and easy to follow. This yoga DVD gives me a great workout yet it is very relaxing. I enjoy the soothing water as a backdrop, and the therapeutic background music fills the space nicely. Great quality videography and I highly recommend this DVD.

This workout is approx. 1 hour long. It is unusual because you start out seated and do poses like seated forward bend right away before you progress to a few standing poses at the end. The pace is slow and relaxing.

I love almost everything about this dvd... the lovely setting (on the beach)... the background music (Japanese flute). Diane gives very clear detailed instructions that I could follow the practice without looking at the screen. The practice is mixed between easy relaxation and invigorating poses that challenge your core...just right.

The only con is that there is no chapter but overall the dvd is so good that I could ignore that issue. However, I think it's worth mentioning.

Headache Relief - Gentle Exercises to Soothe the Pain Away

For the 10% of the population that suffers headaches and migraines, the prospect of another day off work or away from family activities is something to be avoided as much as humanly possible. When a headache strikes, many sufferers tend to reach for the packet of painkillers or over-the-counter medication. These can help but there is the ever-present danger of side effects.

A visit to one's doctor for a full checkup is mandatory if you are having more than the occasional bout of head pain or are experiencing headaches that are worse than the normal ones that can be cured by a good lie down.

Medical doctors can now prescribe an array of headache medicines, both preventatives and those that can be used to stop each individual attack. Many doctors now include a number of non-drug treatments in their armory of methods to stop, lessen or control headaches. An excellent additional strategy that you can use independently to help relieve headaches or migraines is to perform a series of gentle exercises to calm the stress and reverse the muscle spasm that you are experiencing.

Yoga Relaxation Postures

One such series of exercises is the yoga deep relaxation postures (or asanas). Yoga relaxation postures teach you how to stretch and then relax each section of your body from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. They teach you how to breathe correctly and deeply, and how to breathe the stress and tension right out of your body.

A good yoga teacher will also teach you how to relax your mind. A deeply-relaxed mind combined with a deeply-relaxed body will quickly end many headaches and migraines, especially those which are caused or aggravated by the frenetic pace of today's busy lifestyle. Many of these yoga techniques can be learned from books or DVDs, but it is a good idea to study, at least for a while, under an experienced yoga teacher who can monitor your progress and correct any mistakes you are making.

Acupressure

Another form of gentle exercise that many people use to relieve their headaches and migraines is acupressure.

Acupressure is a form of acupuncture, the Chinese medical technique that uses small needles inserted into the body to relieve disease symptoms. Acupressure uses the pressure of thumbs and fingers instead of acupuncture needles to achieve similar therapeutic effects. To relieve a headache with acupressure, you simply press certain spots (called pressure points) on your head, hands and the back of your neck for a short period of time. You can use acupressure wherever you are -- at work, at home, at school, in the car or bus -- and no one else need even know that you have had a headache or have treated it!

There are a number of books and DVDs that teach this technique, but again some personal instruction is highly recommended, as it lets you see and, equally important, feel the technique at work. Your local acupuncturist should be able to teach you the locations of the relevant pressure points, and how to apply the pressure and for how long.

As with everything you do that affects your health, you should let your doctor know that you are intending to do yoga exercises or acupressure, and ensure that you have the "all clear" to do so. Yoga relaxation postures and acupressure have helped thousands of people relieve their headaches and migraines. These techniques are drug-free and inexpensive, and can be used discreetly during most daily activities. You may find that they help with your head pain too.

The Method: Dynamic Toning Review



This is definitely one of the most advanced Pilates, yoga and "precision firming" type workouts I've yet to try. In fact, I doubt I could have done this workout six months ago. If you have been using some of The Method workouts or even have been trying any Pilates or yoga based workouts, this will still be a challenge. I'd start with Walk Away the Pounds and Winsor Pilates, then move on to some MTV Yoga DVDs and then try this workout after about six months of trying anything with Pilates or yoga that is less intense.

I say this because even after working out for years, this was pretty intense! There are balance moves which take muscle strength I didn't think I had. I even noticed one of the other "I assume" instructors got a bit shaky once.

The instructor is brilliant in the way she makes sure you know exactly what you are about to do at every "moment." For beginners, this would be way too fast. If you are intermediate or advanced, this will be a nice challenge. You have to first train your body to respond in seconds to this type of instruction. Marion Gotto is a master teacher and she will "work your entire body" big time! She is relentless and I loved it.

There are three precision toning workouts. Each is made up of the wonderful techniques and combination of movements that make The Method Workouts so classic. You will get to choose from three workouts or just start at the beginning and move through all of the workouts in 60 minutes. Need more of a challenge? Do a Walk Away the Pounds Two Mile Walk before starting this DVD.

So what are the three workouts?

Total Toning - You will be working out all your major muscle groups. You could use just this one section after walking on your treadmill. You start with head rolls, shoulder shrugs, forward bends and your arms get a nice full range of motion. This is a dancer-type routine. You will learn to balance, your feet will get an excellent workout and you will notice lots of Pilates-type moves like the roll-up, teaser. Then you move to some yoga moves while flat on your back and a cat stretch or two.

Upper Body Toning - The way you move on the floor feels like you are in a slow, beautiful dance with weights. The disciplined instruction is inspirational. You start standing, just lifting the weights and then you get more creative, you start using balancing moves while holding the weights. I loved the creative "mermaid" moves and also the incredible no-nonsense upper body workout. You will be making use of gravity in a big way. You never feel that you are doing a boring set of repetitions with weights. You feel like a dancer. Nice and creative.

Abdominal Toning - At this point, you are very happy to be flat on you back again. This segment will test your endurance, muscle control and balance. You can really feel all these exercises working. It took more concentration to complete this portion of the routine, but it was well worth it. Remember the teaser, well it takes on a new meaning here. Just wait and see! You will recognize pilates moves like "saw, side kicks, single leg circles, leg lifts, pull-ups." Can I say this reminded me of the phrase: "no mercy." Ok, but if you are looking for a challenge, this is IT.

Use this workout when you have so much energy you can't wait to find a challenging workout. Then, when you make it through this workout, you will know you have reached a place where you can really feel proud of yourself.

Intermediate to Advanced! Worth Your Time. You might want to take a day off after this routine. You will deserve it!

Work and Grow - -
There is no question that this video is tough. However with practice, strength increases. For beginners, please note that the video is there to challenge you, so do what you can. I enjoy the fact that when doing these exercises you feel all of the described muscles and then next day you are NOT sore. Great video for the determined, intermediate, or advanced. I have the method's All In One workout and am having to practice the steps. Just remember to set your own pace. Great video that will give results.






Not worth your time - -
I had very high hopes when I first got this DVD that it would be an easy introduction to yoga and pilates, which I have seen highly recommened. However, the instructions are not very clear, making it easy to fall behind. In addition, most of the exercises require you to take your eyes off the television, leaving you puzzled as to what moves you should be doing and when. Overall, this video is not one I would recommend unless you are already highly conversant in yoga and pilates.

Practice Yoga as a Lifestyle and Enjoy Every Day

Starting your day off with a short Yoga session, can change your outlook for the entire day. Yet, there are some people who manage an eternally optimistic view of life and have never consciously practiced Yoga. If, or when, they visit a class, they will find themselves surrounded by like-minded positive energy.

How many people do you know who really enjoy life? Take the time to observe their common qualities. You will notice how they look forward to each day. They wake up each morning, anticipating the best possible day. Passion for life fuels positive energy and creates a long-term state of enthusiasm.

In Yoga, positive visualization, and positive affirmations, are taught in order to create a healthy frame of mind. One could naturally be an optimist, but it is nice to have the formula for optimism so close at hand. A Yoga class can also help on those occasions when we feel less motivated.

Once the mind is positively charged, we can look forward to each opportunity the day presents to us. This is in stark contrast to those who see life as an endless trail of tasks, with problems around every corner.

Unfortunately, the negatively-charged mind will drain itself of energy and naturally, work toward draining the energy out of anything surrounding it. You can recommend Yoga, but a pessimist is very uncomfortable when surrounded by enthusiasm, optimism, and self-improvement.

If it is possible for a pessimist to continually practice Yoga over the course of months, you will begin to see a change in him or her. It will not happen instantly, but he, or she, will begin to anticipate opportunities in life. You may even notice that goal-setting skills will follow this person's new found positive outlook on life.

Yogic breathing techniques, (Pranayama), are unconsciously practiced by everyone. Have you observed people sigh, yawn, or huff for natural reasons? Some people, who have never heard of Pranayama, take a deep natural breath every time they feel stressed.

In Yoga classes, we practice Pranayama to link the mind and body. Pranayama helps us be more present in our practice, but it can be a life saver, and a mood changer, in daily life. Try to focus exclusively, and purposely, on drawing out a natural breath, if you are near a conflict.

Once you have managed to breathe slow, steady, and smooth, during a crisis, you will notice that you are not swallowed up into the conflict. Your opinions should be even-handed, and constructive, as a result of Pranayama.

In Yoga, this is a form of breath awareness, which is nice to learn in a classroom setting, but much more valuable, when applied toward daily life situations.

Scam - Yoga In A Hot Room - Part 2

The only reason I can find for anyone to exercise in extreme heat is to become acclimatized to heat for an upcoming competition or sporting event that must happen in the heat.

As you train in the heat your body learns to sweat more, and start sweating much sooner to counteract the increase in body temperature. Sweating rate can more than double and your sweat also becomes more dilute. This means there is less salt in your sweat as your body needs to keep the salt in your blood to keep your blood volume up. With repeated hot training sessions your body can make these adaptations in about 14 days.

You should gradually increase the temperature and time spent in these sessions to allow your body to adapt properly. None of this however means you are any healthier, or working out harder, or releasing 'toxins' (as we have discussed previously, your body does not sweat out toxins, this is flatly false). These changes are just your body getting ready to deal with the next workout in the heat. That's it. You will be just as fit or unfit as you were before you started hanging around in hot rooms.

The only thing that can have a real effect on your fitness is doing real exercise. Forcing your heat to work harder by sweating too much actually makes you fatigue faster, it also decreases your ability to exercise and makes the workouts feel harder than they really are.

I think this is the whole marketing angle behind these 'hot' workouts. You sweat a lot, your heart rate goes up from excessive fluid loss, and you feel like the workout was harder. Sounds like a convenient way to make people feel like they are getting a tough workout without actually working out that hard at all. After all everyone is looking for a quick fix and an easy way out. Adding the element of heat to any workout can trick you into thinking you've had a much harder and productive workout than you actually have.

There do seem to be some benefits to yoga as it can get people to calm their minds and take time away from their busy days. The ritual itself may be the most important and effective tool for helping people de-stress. An environment that promotes calm relaxation, and focused attention on our mind and body can be good for all of us in our busy lives. And all the benefits of yoga can be achieved without forcing yourself to sweat like crazy in a hot room.

The ridiculous claims about the benefits of hot yoga that can be found on the internet are largely unproven by science and in some cases categorically wrong and misleading. The basic idea of exercising in a hot environment presents a considerable risk for dehydration and heat stroke and upon discussing with physiologists I found no good reason to do this unless you are trying to be acclimatized to exercising in hot environments for a specific competition.

Yoga is a great way to de-stress and get in touch with yourself. Exercising in extreme hot conditions presents a serious risk of dehydration and potential for heat illness if the proper precautions are not taken. These are just points to consider when choosing to exercise in excessive heat weather it be yoga or any other exercise.

Namaste - Yoga Adepts

There is a vast ocean of knowledge on the subject of Yoga, so whether one is a beginner or considered a master, it is one of the subjects where one keeps on learning until one reaches the portal of illumination.

There are by default an equal amount of definitions on the subject of Yoga as there are individuals alive on earth and every single one of these definitions is the only correct one. Indeed, this very definition could be classified as a sutra, or "mind boggling" expression of a truth. Please note that I did not write "the truth", but "a truth". And I most certainly would not classify the above definition as a sutra, as it would be a lack of true modesty, which is a characteristic of the true yoga adept, or pupil on the path.

But it will do to demonstrate by example what sutras are. It has become clear to me that sutras have but one goal: give the mind a stupendous jolt. As the mind is responsible for your survival, it cannot but create a sense of "self". To help the pupil circumvent the veil that the mind creates to keep that sense of "self" as a tangible reality, the stupendous "jolt" will keep the mind busy, maybe long enough for the pupil to realize he has the opportunity to go and take a look behind the veil.

Indeed, truth is like a many faceted diamond: it changes when there is an minute difference of the angle from which one looks at it. Two people looking at the same diamond at the same time will definitely and invariably produce quite remarkably different descriptions of the same stone. No wonder diamonds are referred to as the masters of the mineral kingdom.

The first great Yoga master to use the technique of "mind boggling" expressions of truth (or Sutra) was Master Patanjali, who left us a treasure of sutras. It is rumored by adepts of Yoga that if one manages to understand them all, and there are several hundred, illumination of the pupil happens automatically.

The people who are born and raised in the West are ill equipped to deal with Yoga, that is easily understood. The extremely competitive environment, the continual repression of non scientifically proven fact, the speed at which people need to live to keep up constitutes a formidable barrier to surmount if one is to start with the practice of Yoga.

The benefits one can derive from taking up the practice of Yoga are too numerous to be addressed here, a number of posts on this particular aspect of Yoga will follow.

Yoga - What Are the Different Types?

If you are considering taking up yoga, then it is important to understand that there are a variety of types to choose from, each with their own philosophy and techniques. As you embark on your personal yoga journey, it may help to understand the alternatives so you can choose the one that is right for you.

I have experience with four different types of yoga; these being Iyengar, Hatha, Ashtanga and Bikram yoga, so this article will focus on them. There are plenty of others so please don't feel restricted by my experience.
 
Iyengar
 
Iyengar yoga is the most popular style of yoga. It is widely practiced and there are a large number of schools available. I found Iyengar yoga enjoyable and challenging. My main struggle initially was with holding static poses and managing my breathing for the length of time that was required. Over time, I definitely improved and felt a real sense of accomplishment for doing so.
 
There are a huge variety of poses which means that a good teacher will focus each class on different objectives relating to both your body and state of well being. For me that meant that I did not get bored or complacent, because there were lots of different things for me to try.
 
Hatha
 
Hatha is a really lovely, gentle form of yoga. It is excellent for all age groups and fitness levels because you are very fluid in your movements. If you are feeling a bit intimidated by yoga, then this would be the one that I would recommend as a starting point. It is very accessible so that if you are lacking experience you can still easily manage a Hatha yoga class. As this practice is inherently gentle, it is an excellent form of relaxation combined with exercise. You may feel some exertion at times, but certainly not the intensity that Iyengar or Bikram yoga provides. The breathing techniques offer a great opportunity to observe your body and create a sense of stillness in your mind.
 
Ashtanga
 
I have had the least experience with Ashtanga yoga but I really enjoyed it. It is somewhere between Hatha and Iyengar in that it combines movement with breathing (Hatha) but also has poses that are maintained for a period of time (Iyengar). This had a really positive effect overall, as I felt that the class was a bit more physically challenging but still gave me a presence and clarity of mind that I expect from any form of yoga. I would definitely be interested in exploring this method further however it is not as common in Australia, which makes it difficult to find instruction.
 
Bikram
 
Bikram, or hot yoga as some will know it, is rapidly growing in popularity and numbers. Whilst the philosophy of Bikram emerged from India, the trend was born in Los Angeles. Bikram outlines a set of standing and floor-based poses that are designed to work each part of your body over the course of the session. It is recommended that you practice in a hot room (approx. 38 degrees Celsius) to elevate the heart rate and improve muscle movement. Each session follows the same format, offering limited variety. For that reason, a common complaint is that people get bored over time.
 
As a yoga practice, Bikram has a tendency to polarize people. You either love it or loath it. Those that are devoted to Bikram will go three to four times per week and become extremely committed. Those that loath it, will go once or twice and then choose to leave it there. It really comes down to personal preference. I did not have a great experience to be honest but I have met plenty of people that are devoted to Bikram so don't let me put you off!

As you can see, all of these techniques are extremely different from each other and no matter which you choose, you will find some huge benefits. For me, I would encourage you to explore yoga because it brings a full awareness to your body and helps create a sense of well being across so many different dimensions. Good luck!

This video is an excellent example of how yoga can be incorporated into everyday... no class or mat required. I really enjoyed the emphasis on breathing and how the simple act of deepening and being aware of the breath can be so calming. The instruction was very clear and the postures were gentle but effective. I recently used the postures recommended for the airplane on a 5 hour flight was amazed at the difference they made, I actually arrived relaxed and refreshed!

This very useful yoga DVD is divided into sections for all types of travel situations. My favorite sections are airport, airplane, and motel. I also like that the postures are demonstrated by three different people of different ages (yes, I'm over 50 and prefer to see yoga demonstrated by the not-so-flexible).
