Catherine MacRae's Gentle Fitness: Gentle yoga ... chair exercises for seniors, ms, diabetes, parkinsons, COPD, other special needs Review

This is a very easy workout that seems to get just about every muscle in my body moving. I call it my "old lady video" because it is so easy yet when I am feeling achy and sore, I almost always feel much better after I do the exercises. It has several levels and it takes quite a while to do all of them, so I just do what I have time to do. You can skip from one section or level to the other.

Disappointed - Chilipod - NM USA
Following a recommendation, I bought this DVD to aid me (a senior) in becoming more fit without hurting myself. I'm sure this is an excellent fitness program - if you have a physical handicap, chronic illness or disability. It is a limited exercise program and perhaps needs to be described as that to prevent other seniors from buying it who want a thorough overall workout program. While doing it the first (& only) time I felt I should be at least 20 years older (very elderly!) or seriously injured or disabled. Very disapointing & waste of money for me.

Yoga Exercises For Pregnant Women

Pregnant women can definitely benefit from doing yoga. The experience is one in which you can focus on what is happening within your body, relieve the stresses from worry and anxiety as well as keep your body in shape during this time. Pregnancy is a time of great risk though, so any and all exercises performed during this time need to be done with great care. At any time that you feel that you have overdone it, stop and rest. Make sure to ask your doctor if yoga is safe for you during pregnancy especially if you have any complications during it.

Exercises You Can Enjoy And Reap Benefits From

Yoga breathing: Probably the most important aspect to the pregnant women is relaxing and relieving stress. Although it is not an exercise, it is a way of taking control of the body once again to encourage positive-ness and to increase health. The right breathing techniques can provide many benefits. Take the time to practice the most basic of techniques that yoga teaches in breathing.

Standing Yoga poses: In your first trimester, the best exercises to do are the standing yoga poses. These are basic and taught in most yoga sessions. This will help strengthen your legs and muscles and help with circulation while reducing leg cramps too.

Asanas: In the next couple of months, you can do what feels right to you. But, never push too hard. You may want to reduce the time that you spend practicing the Asanas as you do not want to overwork or tire your body.

Moderate twisting: You can do supine poses, backbends as well as some twisting as long as you are comfortable. Just ensure that you are doing these in moderation.

Word Of Caution

It is important to note that many yoga practitioners warn against practicing yoga from the tenth through the fourteenth week of pregnancy since these are crucial times in development. Also, it is important to never overstretch the abdomen during any time of the pregnancy. When twisting, do so with your shoulders and the upper back only. As for inversion poses, only do them through the seventh month is you are completely comfortable doing them. Never push too hard and yoga will be very enjoyable during pregnancy.

Build Muscle Strength Through Yoga Exercises

Yoga. Just the sound of the word can turn people off. I can picture my mom with her floor mat sitting cross legged and stretching her facial muscles and believe me the memory is not one I really care to have, so believe me when I say yoga and strength training are not two things I thought really belonged in the same sentence. But I can admit when I am wrong, and I am wrong on this one. Yoga isn't what I remember and to be honest, I think twenty or thirty years ago, it didn't get a good introduction to America.

As I said, times have changed. Now most gyms offer yoga classes and they aren't just about stretching, although 'just' the act of stretching can increase your strength and fitness all by itself. Yoga is a total mind-body connection experience that can really take you by surprise as you exit the class for the first time. You will be challenged and you will use muscles that you didn't even know existed. And you will be challenged no matter what type of yoga class you take.

So with that let me also say that all yoga is not created equal. There are classes that challenge you more and are more 'athletic' as opposed to stretching and breathing. If you take bikram, vinyasa, 'power yoga', or ashtanga yoga you are in for an endurance building challenge. Those are among the yogas that will give you more of a strenuous workout and can improve your core strength and give you cardio-vascular conditioning. That is accomplished by constant motion between the asanas (poses).

Because yoga techniques generally only work with body weight the entire practice is more 'gentle' with its demands upon you. For this reason it is often used as a therapeutic method to help with healing injuries and pains. The stretching combined with strengthening can help with all sorts of injuries from repetitive strains to back pains. As with any sort of training you don't want to just jump in without checking first with your doctor or therapist, but generally speaking, because of the nature of yoga, it is complimentary to most recommended courses of action for physical therapy.

Yoga classes can be found at most gyms, but you can also find a lot of instruction and videos that can take you through routines at home. I would recommend taking a class with an instructor for anyone who is interested in getting into it, because a certified instructor can help you understand the routines better and help prevent bad habits before they can start. Form is very important in all training and yoga is no exception.

So if you are looking for something to break up your regular routine (and I highly recommend changing up fitness habits to challenge your body) think about checking out a few yoga classes. I think you will be pleasantly surprised and glad you did.

Dog Friendly Exercises

Make no bones about it! If you're among one of the millions of dog owners in the America, chances are high that you will be enjoying the weather with your four-legged friend. A dog is not only a woman's best friend, but can also turn into the best workout partner known to man (hehe). These friendly and furry creatures are full of energy and motivation. We make suggestions on which breeds are good for each exercise, but feel free try out each exercise with "Fido." Maybe he will find a new favorite!

Go Fetch. If you own a lab, this is the perfect exercise for you both. Grab "Fido's" favorite toy. OK, time to try this killer fun exercise. Lay down with your back flat and your knees slightly bent i.e. the pre sit-up sit-up position (mouthful). As you reach the top of the sit-up move, throw "Fido's" toy to send him on a wild goose chase that all dogs love. Pump out as many sit-ups as you can before he gets back. Push yourself. Each time you do this, do more sit-ups than the previous session. While Fido is running like a mad-man you are developing toned abs which you can show off in your fabulous SwimSpot bikini.

Dogstacle Course. This is a fun workout that includes an obstacle course for both human and dog. Set up obstacle stations around your back yard. Include push-ups (for you, not your shaggy friend), step climbing, dashing in-and-out between cones, etc. Courses like this work great for Border Collies. Try to complete the circuit as quickly as possible. Repeat. Repeat. If you get tired, repeat. I think you get the picture. And by the end of the workout, your dog will be panting right alongside you.

Doggie Paddle. They don't call it that for nothing! Yes dogs, especially golden retrievers, are great swimmers. If you have the luxury of a private pool in your backyard then use it to help you and Fido slim down. Try swimming laps with your pup. After a few laps, stop to tread water and throw "Fido's" toy. Treading water will help you catch your breath but still burn massive calories. Then go back at it and swim more laps. Swimming works all the key areas of your body. Especially that all important core, not to mention shaping those wannabe Kelly Ripa ripped arms.

Downward Dog. Yoga with your four-legged friend is a growing trend. If you are looking for a low-impact way to tone your body, this is just for you. Be sure your dog is friendly with others - English Cocker Spaniel's are a perfect match for this one - before attempting this. 'Doga' combines massage, meditation and gentle stretching for dogs. Find a yoga class that includes dogs and join others like you on your journey to get into shape.

Power Paws. Small or large, feisty or lazy, all dogs love being outdoors. Try bringing your pup along on your power walk. Your dog will be ecstatic, especially if they've been cooped up in your apartment all day. A 2-4 mile walk is a great distance to aim for with your Yorkie. They may be small but they love long walks and can keep up. For you, add in shuffles, lunges, and light jogging to mix up your routine.

Hiking. If you are lucky to live near nature paths, hills, canyons, etc. then take advantage of it! Even if you have to drive a few miles to get to the location it's worth it. Our req: Don't leave "Fido" behind. A Pointer makes for a great hiking buddy with his high endurance and ability to protect you. Hiking is a good alternative to walking/running on the treadmill. Breathe in the fresh clean air and soak up the sun while working out!

Be sure that you watch Fido's intake of water before and after exercising. Sometimes dogs lap up too much water and tend to get sick. A good trick is to dump out half of his water bowl before you head for your workout. This way Fido won't get an immediate tummy ache. But stay attentive. Your dog, very much like you, needs to consume water throughout whatever exercise you take advantage of. Hopefully both you and your pup will slim down and enjoy your outdoor bonding time.

Headache Relief - Gentle Exercises to Soothe the Pain Away

For the 10% of the population that suffers headaches and migraines, the prospect of another day off work or away from family activities is something to be avoided as much as humanly possible. When a headache strikes, many sufferers tend to reach for the packet of painkillers or over-the-counter medication. These can help but there is the ever-present danger of side effects.

A visit to one's doctor for a full checkup is mandatory if you are having more than the occasional bout of head pain or are experiencing headaches that are worse than the normal ones that can be cured by a good lie down.

Medical doctors can now prescribe an array of headache medicines, both preventatives and those that can be used to stop each individual attack. Many doctors now include a number of non-drug treatments in their armory of methods to stop, lessen or control headaches. An excellent additional strategy that you can use independently to help relieve headaches or migraines is to perform a series of gentle exercises to calm the stress and reverse the muscle spasm that you are experiencing.

Yoga Relaxation Postures

One such series of exercises is the yoga deep relaxation postures (or asanas). Yoga relaxation postures teach you how to stretch and then relax each section of your body from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. They teach you how to breathe correctly and deeply, and how to breathe the stress and tension right out of your body.

A good yoga teacher will also teach you how to relax your mind. A deeply-relaxed mind combined with a deeply-relaxed body will quickly end many headaches and migraines, especially those which are caused or aggravated by the frenetic pace of today's busy lifestyle. Many of these yoga techniques can be learned from books or DVDs, but it is a good idea to study, at least for a while, under an experienced yoga teacher who can monitor your progress and correct any mistakes you are making.

Acupressure

Another form of gentle exercise that many people use to relieve their headaches and migraines is acupressure.

Acupressure is a form of acupuncture, the Chinese medical technique that uses small needles inserted into the body to relieve disease symptoms. Acupressure uses the pressure of thumbs and fingers instead of acupuncture needles to achieve similar therapeutic effects. To relieve a headache with acupressure, you simply press certain spots (called pressure points) on your head, hands and the back of your neck for a short period of time. You can use acupressure wherever you are -- at work, at home, at school, in the car or bus -- and no one else need even know that you have had a headache or have treated it!

There are a number of books and DVDs that teach this technique, but again some personal instruction is highly recommended, as it lets you see and, equally important, feel the technique at work. Your local acupuncturist should be able to teach you the locations of the relevant pressure points, and how to apply the pressure and for how long.

As with everything you do that affects your health, you should let your doctor know that you are intending to do yoga exercises or acupressure, and ensure that you have the "all clear" to do so. Yoga relaxation postures and acupressure have helped thousands of people relieve their headaches and migraines. These techniques are drug-free and inexpensive, and can be used discreetly during most daily activities. You may find that they help with your head pain too.
