Hatha Yoga and Mastering Self-Realization

Hatha is only one of the nine main forms of Yoga from India. Each of us begins to practice Hatha Yoga for a variety of reasons. Among these many reasons for practicing - some of us are drawn to Hatha Yoga by the healing aspects, the spiritual journey, a feeling of inner peace, or the joy of physical mastery. No matter what the original reason was, self-realization will become a reality sooner or later.

Among those who practice Yoga, on a steady basis, are people with a variety of religious beliefs. Some Yoga practitioners believe in God, or Gods, and some do not believe in the concept of a single or multiple God entities. Yet, practitioners with a wide variety of spiritual beliefs, practice in the same class in complete tranquility.

Self-realization could be defined as a state of mind, where we are present in the moment. Yogis might describe it as the achievement of higher consciousness, through the realization of the inner-being. Some spiritual teachers say self-realization is a state of seeing, knowing, feeling, and being the soul.

Regardless of your exact beliefs, self-realization in Yoga, is being present for practice. The practice of Hatha Yoga is usually pranayama, meditation, mantra, relaxation, asana, mudra, or a combination of these techniques. The study of any form of Yoga will result in the accumulation of wisdom, understanding, and the clarity of perception.

There are some benefits, which result from long-term Yoga practice and self-realization. To know one's self is to know one's true nature, but it takes time, practice, and work. Each of us has a special purpose, but not all of us find it. To know one's true purpose in life is a mystery to most of us. Through insight, and the development of one's intuition, we can attain our true purpose.

How do we develop the insight to find our true purpose? Spiritual beauty is easy to see. Children are good examples of spiritual beauty. The longer we live, the easier it is to be confused by erroneous information. In the confusion, our visions of a brighter future can become clouded by pessimism. The truth is: Spiritual beauty is within each of us.

The next step is to concentrate and find those thoughts that bring happiness to us. When we find inner harmony, all we have to do is share it with those around us. Each day is a second chance to improve our ways. The result of our continued efforts will put us on a path to achieve goodness.

Top Yoga DVDs For Beginners - A Useful Guide

There are many qualities that make a great yoga video and most people would agree on what they are. Still, some videos don`t pass the test when put through the ringer with yoga fans. Which make it hard to decide what is hot and what is not when you`re looking for top yoga DVDs for beginners.

If you have decided to take up the task of yoga but do not necessarily want to try it in a class with other people around, then you need to know what to look for in a video. And just because you have decided not to do it at a yoga place, doesn`t mean that you should compromise on yoga quality and technique. There are specific things you should look for in top yoga DVDs.

The first thing you should look for is that it offers variety in its program. Does it come with more than one DVD? If not maybe inside there are multiple components to the exercise. You will want to choose one that offers variety in the routine and challenges you to the next level. So that when you are using the DVDs that you can try different things to keep yourself challenged.

The next thing you might want to consider is if the video offers varying ways to do the yoga moves. Are there easy and more challenging steps in the sequences? And does the video offer alternate poses and pose adjustments? Those may be things you will find important when you are doing your routine. Another key element in a great video is doing the yoga teachers demonstrate everything they are talking about. Do they show how it is done step by step and slowly, do they put it in words and have it written for extra clarification. The clearer a DVD is, the more likely you will be able to follow it and do it properly.

If you are doing poses in the wrong way, you could injure your body, or simply be doing poses that have little effect. And the last thing to consider is that yoga videos even when there for beginners are still challenging. Most yoga users are already somewhat fit and have some knowledge of exercise. They will be tricky, but not impossible. Just be prepared to go into the video knowing that and you won`t be disappointed. Think of it as a challenge that you can do! Just combine yoga with another exercise to build up on endurance.

Some top yoga DVDs for beginners to mention are `Power Yoga - Total Body Workout with Rodney Yee`, this video provides detoxifying heat to promote inner strength and stamina. Another video is called `Yoga Express - 4 Short Yoga Workouts` this video is great for people new to yoga because the sessions are short and rewarding. `Yoga Journal - Step by Step Session` with Natasha Rizopoules, is a great video because it claims to be for all levels and that it contains variety to keep boredom away.

When you do finally find a video you like on yoga, remember to keep at it. You might find it frustrating or find it hard to get motivated, but just try and fit it into your routine and give yourself time. With practice the poses will become easier and you will notice yourself whipping into shape.

Check Out Raw Yoga; Yoga for the Raw Food Lifestyle

Raw Yoga; Yoga for the Raw Food Lifestyle Review

This little gem of a practice was first introduced to me by Shazzie in her book, "Detox Your World". While it is aimed towards the raw food, vegan lifestyle, I think that anyone with an interest in yoga would benefit from using this dvd. It clocks in at about an hour and also includes a short raw food seminar presented by David Wolfe. It is surprising that Kim Sol is not a yoga dvd superstar as so many other instructors seem to be. This Ashtanga yoga practice is well-instructed and includes many wonderful and challenging sequences. The setting is beautiful (all outdoors) and there are several other people practicing with her. The pacing of the workout reminded me of Rainbeau Mars' style of teaching. ( She is my absolute favorite instructor.) Since I always use one of Rainbeau's dvds in the mornings, I usually turn to Raw Yoga about once or twice a week, on a day off, just to mix things up a bit.
In the event you are unable to find this practice on Amazon, I recommend checking out some of the raw food sites, as they seem to keep it in stock.

Last-Minute Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Shopping for a gift for Mother's Day does not have to be a stressful event. There are a variety of gifts you can get for Mother's Day that would merely take one trip to a store or one phone call. Here are some ideas.

Gifts that relax and soothe. Most mothers and women in general appreciate ways of relaxing and soothing their minds and bodies. Go to any general retail store and look for aromatherapy candles, eye covers and wraps. Some of the wraps are made to go in the microwave and can be placed on shoulders and the back for pain relief. Call your local spa or beauty salon and buy her a gift card for a massage or pedicure. Buy a set of herbal, relaxing teas such as chamomile.

Bookstores. The big chain bookstores are fun places to spend an afternoon looking for books or hanging out with a cup of coffee. You can buy a gift card so your mom can do this on her own, or pick out anything from a music CD to a yoga mat to wrap up as your gift.

Clothing, Shoes, Jewelry, Cosmetics. It is not a good idea to pick out these things for your mother unless you really know exactly what she wants. Instead buy a gift card to a major, upscale department store such as Macy's or Dillard's where she can find all these things and more.

Edibles. Everyone loves food. Why not take your mother to lunch or dinner at her favorite restaurant? If she does not like going out much then order the food and bring it to her. Don't forget the dessert.

Flowers. Just to be safe you should include flowers with all of the above.

Understanding the Different Types of Yoga

Yoga is becoming a more and more popular activity in the Western world today. The number of places holding Yoga classes is on the increase and there is a plethora of different types of Yoga. With a choice of Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Power Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga and many more it can be easy to get confused

The article will help you to understand the difference between the most popular types of Yoga so you can choose which type is right for you.

Hatha Yoga - in Sanskrit (an ancient classical language of India) "Ha" means "sun" and "tha" means "moon". This type of Yoga is relatively slow paced, gentle type of Yoga and is a good place to start if you are completely new to Yoga and don't know any of the asanas (poses). Like all types of Yoga, Hatha Yoga aims to unite the mind, body and spirit.

Ashtanga Yoga - this is the type of Yoga that I practice on a regular basis and means "eight limbs" in Sanskrit. It's a fast moving, intense style of Yoga practice and is based on a progressive set sequence of asanas, synchronized with the breath. Ashtanga Yoga can be quite physically demanding as you constantly move from one asana in the sequence to the next, so you'll find that it will improve your stamina as well as your flexibility and strength..

Power Yoga - this is a western interpretation of Yoga and is based on Ashtanga Yoga. A Power Yoga class may not necessarily stick to the exact sequence of poses like Ashtanga Yoga does, but it does involve practicing a series of poses without stopping and starting.

Iyengar Yoga - This type of Yoga is based on teachings by B.K.S Igengar and concentrates on the correct alignment and form of the body. Unlike Ashtanga Yoga, there is an emphasis on holding each pose for a long period of time rather than moving constantly from one pose to the next. Iyengar Yoga uses props such as blocks and straps to help align the body into the different poses.

Vinyasa Yoga - Vinyasa means breath synchronized movement and is another fast paced type of Yoga, with an emphasis on breathing. A practice typically starts with sun salutations and moves on to more intense stretching. Throughout the practice each pose is balanced with a counter pose.

Bikram Yoga - otherwise known as "Hot Yoga", is practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees, with a humidity of around 40%. Generally a sequence of 26 different poses is practiced during a Bikram Yoga class and the hot temperature helps to loosen muscles. Due to the high temperature most people sweat a lot during the class and this helps to cleanse the body of toxins.

If you're just starting out or have never done any Yoga before, I recommend trying a few different types of yoga to find out what you like best.

Remember, there's no rule that says you have to stick to one type of Yoga. I like Ashtanga Yoga best, but I also go to occasional Iyengar and Hatha Yoga classes for a bit of variety.
