Total Yoga: The Flow Series - Earth Review



I got this Yoga video as part of a set of the three Flow Series videos and the original Total Yoga video. This is the first one I've tried.
I was tired and frustrated and decided to try my new video to relax. And let me tell you, it put me in a great mood. It was quiet and relaxing, got my heart pumping a little, then stretched into relaxing poses for a great cool down. I feel refreshed and ready to get on with my day. It was a little lacking in variety of poses, so I'm glad I got a set of 4 different DVDs, but other than that it was great for me.
The workout starts out with breathing techniques that help relax you before starting. After the breathing, you start with a basic, easy sun salutation with only downward dog, then you go into a slightly more difficult sun salutation series with lunges. Then come standing poses including triangle and warrior 2, then relaxing stretching poses before savasna.
This is a great basic, relaxing video, but I wouldn't recommend this to someone who's never had a class with a live instructor before. Some of the poses are easier with modifications that they don't show, and some of the bends and stretches are better if you know your limits before going into them too hard. But if you've taken at least one class with an instructor and know the basic names and your limits, it's good for a relaxing work out.

Difficulty of poses: Easy - M. Sherwood - San Francisco, CA
I basically agree with everything said in the other reviews, especially the comment about her use of Nameste.

The thing that really bugged me that I wanted to mention was the set. I must have misread one of other reviews. I was expecting a tranquil outdoor setting. Instead the two performers are on a wood floor with no mats in a sterile white room. The best way to describe it was something out of movie where you were trying to indicate someone died and went to heaven. I kept expecting Morgan Freeman to walk out. The floor has a circular section of a light colored hardwood floor that is surrounded by a grey border and it seems to be suspended against a background of clouds... very unreal. There are no walls until the end when they do the pose against the wall and then a white wall magically appears. At the very end when you are suppose to be relaxing with your eyes closed they show all the beautiful outdoor scenes.

My only other complaint was that it seemed a little to dry and serious. To put this comment into perspective, I'm a big fan of Sara Ivanhoe....she seems like she could be anyone's best friend and I like it when she says things like "klunk" your foot forward. If you're looking for something a little more clinical and haven't had much exposure to Yoga then you'll probably like this DVD.

I'm trying to get back into a routine and this DVD is great for beginners or those that have not practiced for awhile. It's gentle enough to do everyday, and relaxing enough that it could even be practiced before bed to wind down. A great step to prepare yourself for the more intensive Total Yoga DVD, which I also highly recommend.

When I first found this DVD, I had not idea what to expect. What happened next is truly worth telling. I spent hours on a Saturday connecting with my spiritual self in ways I had not done in years. I chanted, meditated in a more spiritual way, danced, walked, prayed, breathed more deeply and sang to my creator.

Normally when I exercise, I put in a workout video or get on my treadmill and there is a total lack of spiritual practice 90% of the time. Through this DVD, I realized that the addition of spiritual elements can make you feel good for days and days afterwards. In fact, it could change the way you view exercise.

There are many ways you can incorporate these exercises and spiritual practices into your life. You can select individual activities or choose from over 30 days of combined activities. The activities are filmed in a church filled with candles and some scenes are filmed outside in pastoral settings. The main sections include:

Yoga - Triangle, Tree of Life, Forward Bow, Cobra and Bow of Praise. These poses and exercises are perfect for anyone just starting a yoga practice.

Praise Dances - You may feel a little silly at first (wake-up wiggle made me laugh), but then you feel a sense of freedom as you dance before your creator. Make up any dancing you want and flow with the music. Beautiful pipe organ music is a treat and rare to find in a workout. You could also just walk during this time. I'm learning that to grow spiritually, you have to be open to new things, like praise dancing.

Stretching-This is a combination of mild aerobics with movements that make you feel great. You can walk slow or fast, but you definitely move your arms and get your circulation going.

Meditation- Beautiful contemplations near water

Prayers - Asking God to heal and help you, giving your problems to God. Norris recites Psalm 23 which is very healing.

Norris may be Christian, but he follows God's teaching to "love your neighbor as yourself" and is open to all religions. i read his daily Beliefnet newsletters, "Weight Loss with Norris" and he's very open and loving of all religions. Yoga for Health: Basics/Headaches Review



One thing I can say about this DVD is that it is very relaxing! The setting, the background music, is just great. The first reviewer is sorta right saying that it's "almost amateurish"- it is in the respect that it does not seem like a typical commercialized exercise/yoga dvd. And at first viewing I was a little put off by that, wondering if it would be any good. But I got into it after part of the way through anf actually loved it! And that is just what makes it feel more real and relaxing to me- many of the typical commercialized ones have instructors that have this fakeness, or just a big ego, about them, and often I don't even like the background music. But this one makes you feel like you're in a real yoga class. There are about 5 people doing the yoga including the instructor. I want to mention also that the instructor has a euro accent- which I happen to find a plus because for some reason it's a really relaxing sounding one- but if you don't like accents at all, then maybe this isn't for you. But I can still understand her perfectly fine, and the background music is not too loud or too low, just the right volume.

I don't know why the first reviwer is complaining about the editing- it's fine and the instructor explains the moves perfectly, no confusion for me.

So overall this is a great yoga dvd. The setting and instructor is what can make or break for a good yoga experience. Here is a short summary:

-the intructor spoke in a perfect soothing yoga voice
-moves were clearly explained/demonstrated
-the choice of background music was perfect, including the volume of it
-the ambience in the room was very nice and relaxing
-doesn't get weird or "out there" like some yoga instruction can be

And I'm not one who is easily relaxed, so this is alot coming from me. I so recommend this!

BTW- I havent used this enough yet to see if it actually helps my headaches/migraines. But I'm sure it does somewhat (at least tension headaches) because of how relaxing it is. I'll update this when I do this enough times to have seen if there is any effect on my headaches.

Very soothing/relaxing easy poses for light days - Lena, LMT - Nassau, NY
This dvd is like her Depression & Gastro-Intestinal but I would say the Depression one has more poses & requires more energy then this one. This one as the basics name shows is much more mild for light days when you are tired, have injury, etc. There is a lot of child's pose & lying down after each pose & there aren't as many. I still like this as I enjoy Jenny's soothing style which you can feel even as she talks to her students where other yoga dvd's can't do the same even in voice over. She doesn't go into how to do the poses correctly, so this is best for beginners who already have taken a few classes or have more instructional information dvds.
Jenny Corneo is very calming w/a nice Spanish? accent which I had no problem following. This is done in a large industrialized space w/concrete floors w/white walls w/interesting windows & beautiful, simple decorations. There are 4 other students, all in different shapes & ethnics and 1 man. The production could be better, but the camera angles have artistic sweeping shots, zooms in, move around to different angles slowly throughout. The music is VERY light, almost don't hear it, but it's very soothing & beautiful.
Jenny has a relaxed style, she goes in/out of each pose w/you, and then during helps fix other students postures. She tells the benefits of each pose as she helps other students. She usually has a relaxation after each pose for several seconds. She has great body awareness & the session really flowed. The music is very light, almost don't notice it, but the session was healing.
Poses used for both sessions which are very similar - alt. nostril breathing, reclined simple stretches, sun salutations, reclined leg stretches, shoulderstand, plow, bridge, fish, sitting fwd single & both leg bends, cobra, cat/cow, seated twisted pose, standing fwd bend, savasana.



Decent workout for most levels, despite low production values - Mian Bao - Mountain View, CA
While a previous review by pinar calls this video "almost amateurish", I would disagree with this statement by instead calling the video "very amateurish". However, despite the low technical quality, the yoga instruction itself is quite suitable for almost any level. If you are as inflexible as I am you just won't push anywhere near the level that they do on the video, but you'll still get a good stretch in.

I haven't done the exercises when I've had a headache, but you spend a fair bit of time inverted, which I'm assuming is to help with headaches. You shouldn't get this if you are preggers or have high blood pressure. Jenny does get a bit "out there" by my reference, since you start by alternating plugging one nostril and breathing through the other. It might actually work to de-stress you, though, if you aren't overly distracted by having a finger up your nose. At one point she delivers the classic line "this is a great position for releasing gases from your stomach" which brought the value up a lot for me by itself.

In summary, if you want to do some basic poses, some relaxation poses, and possibly release some gas (and who doesn't?) then this is the video for you.

The almost amateurish production of the DVD initially did not bother me (although it may bother some!). What I found to be most disappointing about this DVD is that the two parts ('basics' and 'headaches') are almost identical. Why bother calling one 'basics' and the other 'headaches' if there ie almost no difference (if there is. it should be explained to us)? The order of the moves are changed ever so slightly and one is 3-4 minutes longer than the other. The producers did not even bother with two takes, just edited one take and placed under two different headings.
The editing overall is not good, the instructor starts explaining one move and then the editor cuts to another move. The sound is also bad, it is difficult to hear the instructor.
Overall, if this was a home-made video a friend of mine had passed on to me, I would have probably appreciated it. But not as a DVD for which I had to pay this amount of money!

Yoga Inside Out: Go Deeper [intermediate-advanced] Review



Everyone has given very detailed reviews so I don't have much more to add other than how I felt while doing the dvd. Paula is a very knowledgeable about body mechanics. I appreciated her instructions. I also appreciated that she had students of different body types in the class. The class has every element of a typical 90 minute yoga class; pranamaya, asana, savasana, and meditation. I did have some issues that are worth mentioning:

1. She referred to Kapalabhati breathing as breath of fire. It is not. They are 2 different breaths and it is common for non kundalini yoga teachers to get this wrong. Kapalabhati (cleasning breath) focuses on the exhale with no inhale. Breath of fire has an equal inhale and exhale which is light like sipping but thru the nose only.

2. Paula's form on the dvd bothered me, a lot. Her shoulders were slouching forward on a lot of the poses. As another reviewer said, do what she says not what she does.

3. The music was too loud and quite annoying especially during the meditation. ALL yoga dvds should have a music off option.

Beyond these minor complaints, this a good dvd for everyone, including beginners. The advanced poses are crow, side crow and tripod headstand. The other poses are quite basic and very accesible. A good addition to one's yoga dvd library.

Nice intermediate practice - Bundita - Arbovale, WV USA
The instruction in this DVD is detailed with attention to good body dynamics. The practice flows along at a moderate pace, and the music is conducive to an inward focus. The instructor's voice is gentle and soothing. I found the elaborate approach to warrior I sort of silly - I mean, the point is to align the pelvis with the front of the mat, but once you've learned that, the long approach (starting with the front knee straight, and getting the whole torso aligned before bending it) seems like a beginner's exercise. In fact, this DVD would be suitable for a beginner who was in reasonably good physical condition. While there are a couple of advanced poses, this DVD would not be terribly challenging for an advanced practitioner. The missing star is for a few occasions where the timing of the instruction was not good, and I had to come part of the way out of an asana to look at the video.

This is a great intermediate/advanced workout, i have been doing yoga for 5 years and I have tried lots of advance yoga DVDs, however, this one is one of my best DVDs, I dont recommend this DVD for an absolute beginner, there are lots of variations being used, and some are suitable for beginners, however these variations in my opinion are being used to warm the body up and get the body ready for more advanced poses, it is still challenging for a beginner but it will be tough.
This DVD is great for body shaping and improving flexibility as well, an excellent choice.

This yoga dvd is excellent. Paula Tursi's detailed explaination on the spine and her student that demonstrated the yoga poses was so informative and the visuals added to the understanding of the spine and how it works. I would recommend this also to beginning students as well as intermediate and advanced. I teach yoga and have recommended this dvd to my students to purchase.

Check Out Yoga For Beginners for $7.25

Appreciate all the detail from prior reviewers. Spent a lot of time reading reviews of all "beginner" yoga DVDs. Glad this was the one I chose. Recovering from pulling lower back muscle & needed to expand from couple stretching exercises from Doctor. I watched thru entire DVD as suggested & you need to as well. Parts were hard to just sit thru & watch, but fast forward came in handy for parts of the process. Appreciated ability to pick & choose which beginner sections I wanted to do (differing lengths), can't do all of them in 1 day; able to choose couple of different program lengths to suit schedule & could focus right now on lower back. Looking foward to expanding to do the rest of the beginner sections and move on to the next level exercises - would be further along, but I gotta get my back muscles strong again. Nice menu set up & easier to follow than I expected. I can see where 1 reviewer was a bit impatient, one of the initial 30 min programs seems to be best done after a long day at work because basically relaxation, but it does teach breathing very well. I'll be able to take that lesson into all my exercising, not just yoga. Glad I chose this one to start, never done Yoga before & sure miss my regular exercising at least 1 hour 5x/week combining powerwalking, bicycling, Kathy Smith/Karen Voight/few other DVDs. So easy to gain weight. At least I feel like I'm doing something effective with these yoga exercises. I don't feel tired when done, actually feel like I've exerted myself without worrying about slight strain in my back from the twists, it goes away in just a few minutes and has gotten less "strained" as I continue. Been at it 2 weeks now. Also purchased Kathy Smith Yoga Sculpt & Yoga For Weight Loss - both say for beginners, (I've only watched them for right now)- like prior reviewers wrote - This is the one to start with.

Yoga For Beginners Specifications

How are these DVDs different from other yoga DVDs?

Power Yoga for Every Body is a bit more challenging taking you from the beginning level and gradually progressing to much more demanding routines.
