Hissing Cobra - Yoga

Benefits Forcibly gets rid of stale air and toxins in the bottom of the lungs

Focus Keep your chest as low to the ground as you can for as long as you can before arching your body. Hiss as loudly as you can for maximum benefit. Once in the extended forward position with your arms locked, keep lengthening and stretching through your abdominal muscles as you hiss.

Sit on your heels on the floor. Lean forward and stretch your arms out in front of you, palms flat on the floor. Inhale.

Exhaling strongly through your mouth (making a hissing sound), slide your chin and chest forward along the floor. Keep your hips low.

Push up with your arms, and support your body on locked elbows; drop your head backward, arch your back, and stretch through your abdomen. Continue hissing until you empty your lungs completely.

When you run out of breath, inhale while you sit back on your heels, arms extended in front of you, palms flat on the floor.

Repeat Hissing Cobra 6 more times, hissing as you slide forward and inhaling as you sit back on your heels. Do not take any extra breaths in between.

Sit back on your heels with your arms outstretched and your head on the floor. Rest, and notice how clean your lungs feel.

Buying Yoga Products

The demand for yoga products has sky- rocketed in the past few years, especially in the developed markets of the west and some parts of the Southern Hemisphere like Australia, New Zealand etc. The presence of Indian diaspora in many continents of the world has helped immensely in the popularization of yoga not just as a form of exercise but as a way of life.

In order to cater to this latent demand, savvy Indian businessmen have turned into exporters of Yoga products. By leveraging their contacts amongst overseas vendors these exporters have created outlets for sale of their goods in overseas markets. It is a mutually beneficial situation for both as exporters get new markets, while buyers get yoga products at deeply discounted prices. They have opened up appealing store fronts to capture the imagination of buyers based in India and abroad.

Yoga products like mats, videos, CD's, DVD's, flower essences, candles and other similar products which assist in meditation and exercise are in high demand from developed countries where these items are quite costly. Users have the option of buying yoga products online or from vendors who import yoga products from India in bulk. By procuring goods in bulk; vendors pass on these discounts to enthusiastic buyers.

Adopting the online route is also a cost effective way to procure yoga products. Online retailing eliminates the possibility of intermediaries and therefore users can be assured of significant discounts while purchasing yoga products from online retailers. Online retailers are the perfect medium for purchasing yoga items which do not require users to touch and feel the products before buying them like books, CD's, DVD's, flower essences, incense etc. Unlike consumer durables, most yoga items like yoga mats, bolsters, bags, straps, clothes etc can easily be purchased from the net without the need for users to go in for a 'touch and feel' exercise to judge quality.

Online retailers offer a replacement guarantee to users who are not satisfied with the delivered items. In-built online payment gateways carry a certificate of authenticity from trusted third party agencies. So users can be assured of safety and privacy of financial data while transacting online. Online retailers usually align with vendors who have a strong distribution backbone and can deliver the desired products across geographical boundaries. Buyers have the convenience to order products from any location and obtain delivery within two or three working days.

Dog Friendly Exercises

Make no bones about it! If you're among one of the millions of dog owners in the America, chances are high that you will be enjoying the weather with your four-legged friend. A dog is not only a woman's best friend, but can also turn into the best workout partner known to man (hehe). These friendly and furry creatures are full of energy and motivation. We make suggestions on which breeds are good for each exercise, but feel free try out each exercise with "Fido." Maybe he will find a new favorite!

Go Fetch. If you own a lab, this is the perfect exercise for you both. Grab "Fido's" favorite toy. OK, time to try this killer fun exercise. Lay down with your back flat and your knees slightly bent i.e. the pre sit-up sit-up position (mouthful). As you reach the top of the sit-up move, throw "Fido's" toy to send him on a wild goose chase that all dogs love. Pump out as many sit-ups as you can before he gets back. Push yourself. Each time you do this, do more sit-ups than the previous session. While Fido is running like a mad-man you are developing toned abs which you can show off in your fabulous SwimSpot bikini.

Dogstacle Course. This is a fun workout that includes an obstacle course for both human and dog. Set up obstacle stations around your back yard. Include push-ups (for you, not your shaggy friend), step climbing, dashing in-and-out between cones, etc. Courses like this work great for Border Collies. Try to complete the circuit as quickly as possible. Repeat. Repeat. If you get tired, repeat. I think you get the picture. And by the end of the workout, your dog will be panting right alongside you.

Doggie Paddle. They don't call it that for nothing! Yes dogs, especially golden retrievers, are great swimmers. If you have the luxury of a private pool in your backyard then use it to help you and Fido slim down. Try swimming laps with your pup. After a few laps, stop to tread water and throw "Fido's" toy. Treading water will help you catch your breath but still burn massive calories. Then go back at it and swim more laps. Swimming works all the key areas of your body. Especially that all important core, not to mention shaping those wannabe Kelly Ripa ripped arms.

Downward Dog. Yoga with your four-legged friend is a growing trend. If you are looking for a low-impact way to tone your body, this is just for you. Be sure your dog is friendly with others - English Cocker Spaniel's are a perfect match for this one - before attempting this. 'Doga' combines massage, meditation and gentle stretching for dogs. Find a yoga class that includes dogs and join others like you on your journey to get into shape.

Power Paws. Small or large, feisty or lazy, all dogs love being outdoors. Try bringing your pup along on your power walk. Your dog will be ecstatic, especially if they've been cooped up in your apartment all day. A 2-4 mile walk is a great distance to aim for with your Yorkie. They may be small but they love long walks and can keep up. For you, add in shuffles, lunges, and light jogging to mix up your routine.

Hiking. If you are lucky to live near nature paths, hills, canyons, etc. then take advantage of it! Even if you have to drive a few miles to get to the location it's worth it. Our req: Don't leave "Fido" behind. A Pointer makes for a great hiking buddy with his high endurance and ability to protect you. Hiking is a good alternative to walking/running on the treadmill. Breathe in the fresh clean air and soak up the sun while working out!

Be sure that you watch Fido's intake of water before and after exercising. Sometimes dogs lap up too much water and tend to get sick. A good trick is to dump out half of his water bowl before you head for your workout. This way Fido won't get an immediate tummy ache. But stay attentive. Your dog, very much like you, needs to consume water throughout whatever exercise you take advantage of. Hopefully both you and your pup will slim down and enjoy your outdoor bonding time.

Smart Abdominal Training

Contrary to popular belief ab exercises will not give you a toned tum. Actually, as counter intuitive as it seems, too many ab exercises can make your stomach appear larger. The reason behind this is that abs, trained like any other muscle group, will pack on muscle mass with strength training to fatigue and then rest.

Do not get me wrong, strong and balanced core muscles are a must have and ab exercises are a necessary component of any strength training program. However, the truth is, ab exercises build muscle, and cardiovascular exercises burns fat. Finding the right balance between losing the layer of fat covering abs, and toning the muscles so they show through are what it is all about.

Here are some tips to properly train for a flat, toned midsection:

1. You do not have to train abs everyday

Even though the abdominal is an endurance muscle (meaning, they are used for stamina, not strength or power) they still need 48 hours to rest like any other muscle, to build and repair to promote growth and change.

2. Other exercises adequately train abs

Any exercises that require balance will train your core. This includes dancing, yoga, push ups, squats, lunges, and many sports. Reduce the amount of abs training if you participate in many physical activities.

3. Reduce the amount of weight bearing crunches

Some people do crunches with weights, whether it is on the cable pulley, holding a weight plate or doing side bends. This of course is great, but to minimize the abs from putting on too much muscle, limit these exercises in favour of body weight core exercises such as bridges, planks and traditional crunches and all of the variations.

Use these tips in combination with cardio for a tight tummy and balanced physique.

Happy Exercising!

Check Out Healing Yoga for $8.20

Healing Yoga Review

This DVD is a re-release of a product that originally came out on VHS titled "Yoga Remedies for Natural Healing." Because the practice features five short yoga routines (each about 8.5 minutes), the DVD format is a vast improvement, as you can easily go directly to the routine of your choice from the main menu. The practices are led by yoga instructor Rodney Yee, who teaches via voiceover. In addition to the five main routines, there is also a 4-minute "Conscious Breathing" exercise; here Yee leads the viewer through breath awareness while in a reclined position. I have described each of the five main practices in detail below.

Stress. This practice is a bit shorter than the others (7.5 minutes), and it is designed to release tension from the head, neck, and shoulders; Yee demonstrates along with fellow yoga instructor Suzanne Deason. It begins with several arm stretches, including stretching the arms overhead and into eagle arms. There is also a single sun salutation and several standing poses (triangle, side angle, wide-legged standing forward bend). The practice finishes with some additional arm stretches an a brief savasana.

Indigestion. Here Deason demostrates alone, beginning in a reclined position for a series of reclined twists. Several variations on seated (sage) twists follow, and the routine concludes with child's and hero's poses.

Back Pain. This practice uses two blankets and a strap; Yee is practicing alone. The props are used to facilitate several supported reclined postures. There is a brief cat/cow stretch followed by down dog, and then cobra pose is practiced with the blanket under the hips. The routine finishes in child's pose.

Fatigue. This practice uses a chair and two blankets, and I believe the demonstrator is Yee's ex-wife, Donna Fone. The first posture is standing forward bend with the head supported on the chair, and then down dog is performed with the head supported on the block. Next, the chair is again used to support the head in a seated forward bend. The final pose was a sort of modified plow, resting the knees and the tops of the feet on the chair; this posture was a bit difficult to set up, especially given that not much time is allowed here. The practice finishes with a brief rest with calves on the chair.

Headache. This session, which Yee leads alone, was a bit longer at 9.5 minutes. It consists mainly of supported, restorative postures. Yee uses two blankets and an eye bag for both legs-up-the-wall pose and a reclined lying chest opener with the feet at the wall. This routine also includes practice of alternate nostril breathing and brief meditation.

Overall, this DVD offers a nice selection of short yoga practices. I would recommend the DVD mainly to those with some prior yoga experience, as the practices move a bit quickly at times. My favorite routine was the Stress, which required no props and which did not suffer from the lack of longer pose holds.
