Sad Cover - Manuel Garza - Corpus Christi, Texas United States
The cover is so unattractive. It looks low quality. I know we shouldn't "judge books by their cover" but really. Your cover makes me think the production value of the DVD itself is going to be poor.

Ashtanga Yoga is a Demanding Style of Yoga

If you have performed different types of yoga, you may think that you should make an easy transition to Ashtanga yoga, but this is not necessarily true. The fact is that Ashtanga is a much more difficult and physically demanding type of yoga than you might be used to.

Because this is such a physically demanding type of yoga, it is recommended that you do not try to do this type of yoga on your own. Those who achieve best results usually are able to find a teacher, class or workshop so that they can learn the proper forms and postures that they need to know in order to do this type of yoga properly.

The reason why Ashtanga is designed to be such an intense form of yoga is because its developers felt that if there is intense heat created inside a person's body, then this heat would work to help eliminate toxins and other impure things inside a human body. The desired result from doing this kind of yoga is a clear mind as well as a clear body.

In order to properly learn how to do this kind of yoga, the following steps should be followed:

o Learn the poses - This sounds simple enough, but it can be much more difficult than it sounds. Ashtanga yoga is made up of a series of different poses. The poses are designed to promote the body's flexibility and strength. It is also hoped that this type of yoga is able to improve the circulation of blood and the function of some internal organs.

o Breathe - Yes, we know this sounds self explanatory, but there are certain ways that you need to breath in order to properly complete this kind of yoga. In yoga, the breathing techniques are referred to as "pranayama." This process is what is said to purify the energy that flows through the body. Each pose that a person makes must be coordinated to go along with a certain kind of breathing in order to do this yoga properly.

o Meditate - Meditation is a big part of any kind of yoga. This is true for Ashtanga as well. Meditation is used to help the person doing yoga relax their mind and get in tune with what it is that they are doing. Even when you are not performing yoga, meditation can help change the way you react to different situations. It can result in a more stable self that is calmer and more inspired to make proper choices.

o Practice - You probably will not completely grasp hold of Ashtanga yoga the first time you do it. It can be difficult because it is an intense workout that still requires you to be able to control your breathing in a certain way. For some people, it takes a fair amount of practice to get this technique down. There is no reason why you should get discouraged if you at first feel like a fish out of water. Simply practicing this type of yoga and the breathing that accompanies it can help you understand what you need to do in no time.

Radiant Flow with Janet Stone Review

I bought the 2 Janet Stone DVD's from her website , I am a Shiva Rea fan and I heard she was one of Janet's inspirations. If you own Shiva Rea's Fluid Power and Creative Core Abs you will notice a lot of the moves and variations of poses. I liked this practice better than Mellow Flow which I didn't find so mellow. Radiant Flow is challenging and fast paced though I wish it was slower so I can concentrate in the poses better but it is still a fun and sweaty flowing practice. Here is a description of the practice but I probably forgot some poses and it isn't necessarily in order - It starts sitting and chanting om once , then it moves to some poses in kneeling position like kneeling bow and kneeling side bow stretch. there were some up dog / down dog fluid vinysas , deep lunge with a tricep stretch , lunge with twist , chair with twist with no hold , just moving in and out of the pose 3 times each side. warrior 1 with eagle arms to warrior 3 with eagle arms (tough) bound warrior 2 to triangle ,yogic squat to wide legged standing forward bend with several variations and tripod headstand , a full split , a strange lunge position that goes straight into side crow with legs straight (which you can see on youtube) , crow and the scorpion plank / down dog to side plank/bridge from Shiva's Dancing Warrior 1008 is repeated a few times throughout the practice. I have to say that I felt a burn in my legs after the standing sequence.
It also has a core sequence (similar to Shiva's) with backbends - dolphin to forearm plank with pulses and then sphinx to plank with pulses (tough), leaning back while kneeling and then camel pose. several core exercises on the back and bridge with several varaitions (with one leg for instance) plow to seated forward bend , supine poses and then plow again with shoulderstand ,then shavasana. I wish there were more backbends since it's a good preparation practice for backbends. the music is good (shaman's dream).

The toughest Vinyasa Yoga I've done...loved it - James E. White - Oak Park, IL
Janet Stone's Radiant Flow is geared towards yogis/yoginis with some experience under there belts or at least very gifted beginner (e.g. flexible person coming from dance background). The poses flow quickly and challenging. For instance, Janet has a series that leads into a side crow pose (balancing your body on both arms one leg to the side the other straight back). This in and of itself is not easy, but the sequence leading up to the pose is what really sets this apart from many yoga DVDs I've owned. I have read some criticism of her DVDs that they are too expensive for what you get. That you should get 2-3 sessions for the money. Honestly, this one flow is better than anything else I've done to date and that includes accomplished Yoga instructors like Shiva Rea and Debbie Dobbins (both of whom make awesome Yoga DVDs, and I consider them the gold standard in this area. So if you are an experienced practitioner looking for the next level in your yoga practice, this is a must buy.

Janet Stone's Radiance Ripples into my Being and out into my World - Maddy Avena - N. CA
I've just done this DVD for the first time. I've been wanting both these DVDs (Radiant Flow and Mellow Flow) for a long time after trying her CD, so when my mother sent me some money for my birthday, I treated myself to both.
The flows were creative and interesting, balanced, heart opening, challenging, always in movement, in breath, in love. I am sitting here feeling like a flower that was just watered deeply and is now being embraced by the sun and the sweet air. I didn't want it to end. I wish I lived closer to San Francisco. I'd go to Janet's Saturday morning class every week that I could.
I'll let other reviewers be quantitative in their reviews. All I can really say is that I felt my own beautiful strength in everything I did in such a joyful and gentle way. I am convinced that if everyone did Janet Stone yoga, there would be Peace on Earth.
(Just a caution: This is not a beginner's practice, but definitely one to aspire to.)

My sanity DVD - David A. Barnard - Paradise, CA
Janet and Shaman's Dream (the music) are the best part of my day. She makes me work hard while honoring and loving myself and my limitations. More advanced moves are so fun and challenging! I prefer this over Ashtanga now.

Quit Smoking - Can Yoga Help You Kick the Habit?

Yoga is said to offer a whole host of benefits to practitioners including the development of long, lean muscles, increased strength and vitality, better circulation and lowered stress levels. But yoga can also have some curative benefits as well including the potential to help you to quit smoking.

A smoking habit is a powerful addiction. Most smokers are very much aware of the dangers of smoking, and have tried to quit many times before. People who want to quit but are afraid to because they don't want to gain weight will be glad to know that using yoga as a way to let go of cigarettes will ensure that you avoid this troublesome side effect of quitting. The weight gain associated with quitting smoking is caused by replacing the habit of smoking with the habit of putting too much food in your mouth. With yoga, we will be replacing the habit of breathing in cigarette smoke with deep cleansing breaths of healing oxygen that will fill your lungs with clean air, clear your mind and rejuvenate your body.

Yoga works in several ways to help you to quit smoking:

o Helps you to cultivate enough willpower and discipline to quit smoking

o Gives you the tools to manage your body's cravings for nicotine

o Puts you deeply in touch with your body and breath; you will no longer want to pollute your newly healthy body with the deadly toxins from smoking.

Specific Yogic Techniques to quit smoking:

o Pranayma (deep, controlled breathing)
The deep breathing pranayma techniques actually heal your body as the nicotine is leaving the body and lungs. Deep breathing exercises also help at those when strong nicotine cravings occur. Practicing these exercises in addition to regular yoga asana practice eventually replaces the smoking habit and the craving begins to diminish until they have vanished completely.

o Jala Neti
Jalaneti is the practice of using a small vessel called a neti pot filled with warm salted water to gently flush the nasal passages. Jala neti works to clean the nasal passages, but it also serves to stimulate the pituitary gland in the brain, which awakens the Ajna Chakra located behind the forehead. Jalaneti, when performed before meditation helps to create a space for clear and unobstructed breathing.

o Meditation and visualization
The practice of meditation brings you to a place of relaxed awareness where you can access your inner strength and wisdom. While in meditation you can visualize all of the stress, worry, tension and negative emotions are flowing away from your body. You can also visualize yourself as you intend to be, a healthy, happy, non-smoker.

Yoga helps you to cultivate a new healthier lifestyle. It increases lung capacity and through practicing the asana, meditation, visualization, jala neti and deep, pranayma breathing the urge to smoke and pollute the body eventually simply fades away.

5 Free Games to Entertain the Kids When Traveling by Car

When you are planning a big trip by car, you need to consider how you will entertain the kids.

Sure a portion of the trip may be ruled out with sleeping (if you are lucky), your kids will no doubt be wanting some snack time also.

However when they are awake you want to be able to keep them distracted, and focused on something other than 'how long till we get there'.

Sure there are plenty of games on the market to keep your kids amused. Nintendo DS, Leapfrog Leapster, MP3 Players, Portable DVD players and if you can afford them, then why not. They will all offer a great level of distraction for your children.

But in today's financial market, we can not all afford these toys. Some of us are lucky enough to afford the vacation in the first place.

So we need to look at frugal ways to entertain the family in the car.

Below we have listed five games for your family to play whilst traveling to your destination by car. First and foremost they are free, which is what will definitely appeal to the parents and they are fun, which will appeal to the kids.

1/ The Game of Cricket: One person bats and scores a run for every car you pass. However if you pass a truck consider that out and move onto the next person. You decide how many rounds you will have and the person with the most runs wins

2/ Paper, Rock, Scissors: Players count to three then make their hands either, the shape of a rock (clenched fist), the shape of paper (flat hand) or the shape of scissors (hands clenched with index and middle finger stretched out into the shape of scissors). Rock smothers scissors but is smothered by paper. Paper smothers rock but is cut by scissors. Scissors cut paper but are smothered by rock. Winner is the best of three

3/ The Rainbow Game: Each person in the car chooses a colour. You decide what the target is, depending on how attentive the people in the car are. In this scenario lets choose 10. Each time you see a car in your choose colour, say the colour for confirmation and add it to your tally. The person to reach the target first is the winner.

4/ The Letter Change Game: Someone start by saying a word and then work your way around the car, with each person saying a different word, yet only changing one letter. E.g. Game, Same, Tame, Fame, etc. This is a great one for those older kids in the family.

5/ Guess the Animal Game: This is a bit like, 'Who am I' except is based on animals. This is a game aimed at the younger kids in the car. Take it in turns of being the animal and try and get everyone else to guess what you are. E.g. I am gray, I have big ears, I have a trunk etc. Or to put another spin on it, you can get the people guessing to ask the questions and the person playing the animal just answers 'yes' or 'no'. When someone thinks they know what it is they can guess.

Build Muscle Strength Through Yoga Exercises

Yoga. Just the sound of the word can turn people off. I can picture my mom with her floor mat sitting cross legged and stretching her facial muscles and believe me the memory is not one I really care to have, so believe me when I say yoga and strength training are not two things I thought really belonged in the same sentence. But I can admit when I am wrong, and I am wrong on this one. Yoga isn't what I remember and to be honest, I think twenty or thirty years ago, it didn't get a good introduction to America.

As I said, times have changed. Now most gyms offer yoga classes and they aren't just about stretching, although 'just' the act of stretching can increase your strength and fitness all by itself. Yoga is a total mind-body connection experience that can really take you by surprise as you exit the class for the first time. You will be challenged and you will use muscles that you didn't even know existed. And you will be challenged no matter what type of yoga class you take.

So with that let me also say that all yoga is not created equal. There are classes that challenge you more and are more 'athletic' as opposed to stretching and breathing. If you take bikram, vinyasa, 'power yoga', or ashtanga yoga you are in for an endurance building challenge. Those are among the yogas that will give you more of a strenuous workout and can improve your core strength and give you cardio-vascular conditioning. That is accomplished by constant motion between the asanas (poses).

Because yoga techniques generally only work with body weight the entire practice is more 'gentle' with its demands upon you. For this reason it is often used as a therapeutic method to help with healing injuries and pains. The stretching combined with strengthening can help with all sorts of injuries from repetitive strains to back pains. As with any sort of training you don't want to just jump in without checking first with your doctor or therapist, but generally speaking, because of the nature of yoga, it is complimentary to most recommended courses of action for physical therapy.

Yoga classes can be found at most gyms, but you can also find a lot of instruction and videos that can take you through routines at home. I would recommend taking a class with an instructor for anyone who is interested in getting into it, because a certified instructor can help you understand the routines better and help prevent bad habits before they can start. Form is very important in all training and yoga is no exception.

So if you are looking for something to break up your regular routine (and I highly recommend changing up fitness habits to challenge your body) think about checking out a few yoga classes. I think you will be pleasantly surprised and glad you did.

My Experience with Bikram Yoga

Yoga's rejuvenating and mind-clearing abilities are pretty much undisputable at this point, but what about the more intense, physically trying experience of Bikram yoga, a growing trend amongst yoga devotees? Here's my experience with Bikram yoga, and why I'll most certainly be doing it again.

Bikram yoga is a specific style of yoga founded by Bikram Choudhury. Bikram yoga is often referred to as hot yoga as it is practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees with a humidity of 50%.

The origin of this type of yoga is spiritually derived from Hinduism and regionally from Yoga College of India. Bikram yoga consists of 26 asanas or postures and two breathing exercises.

The word asana translates to the word "seat" which refers to the spirit in relation to the divine. Asanas are intended to lead back to sitting in meditation. The practice of asanas improve flexibility and tendon strength.

These moves, called asanas, are supposed to be practiced together with pranayama, or slow breath work for maximum benefit. Your breaths should be through the nose, not the mouth, and should be slow, not forced, and totally natural. To receive maximum benefit from practicing asanas, all tension and tightness in the body should consciously be let go.

A glass of water before practicing asanas enhances the experience and asanas should not be done on a full stomach. The practice of Bikram yoga is meant not only to improve muscle strength and flexibility, but also to establish a balance of our physical beings in relation to the divine.

Yoga is a path to attain a balance of the body, mind and spirit. Yoga can, if done correctly, be a means to control the ongoing complaint in all of our lives, stress. Optimum health is the ultimate goal for everyone of us. Health does not just refer to our physical beings but also to our mental attitudes and spiritual growth.

Bikram or hot yoga addresses emotional as well as physical well being and flexibility. When I visited my daughter in California, she signed me up for my first experience with hot yoga. Being in my fifties, I was a little concerned about the prospect of being a complete amateur at any kind of yoga and the possibility of being the oldest participant in the class.

When I entered the flaming hot classroom, it was clear to me that, to my relief I was not the "oldest one" in the class room. I was happily surprised at my ability to do so many of the postures. My self realization during the hot yoga class was my need to "stress" or hurry up at all times.

Constant focus on slowing down the breath and only breathing through my nose was a challenge for me. The heated room was something I thought I would not be able to tolerate. The fact that the room was so hot and the humidity was so high may seem like an added burden, but in fact, I believe this was the reason I did not come away with muscle aches the next day.

During some of the postures, I was keenly aware of my need to improve my balance and my sense of my physical position in space. For ongoing achievement of balance, I have been practicing the art of yoga via an instructional DVD in my home.

Particularly useful to me, in addition to the improvement of balance is the yoga reminds me to slow down and relax the tension in my body. The concept of the heated room in Bikram yoga is to diminish the risk of injuries and to allow you to go deeper into each posture.

The perspiration experienced during hot yoga enhances the release of toxins. The postures consist of warm up poses that can be done prior to a yoga class. There are standing poses and seated poses. The twist yoga poses have the purpose of strengthening your back, toning the abdomen and helping with digestion.

Inverted poses help you with your circulation. There's supine and backbend poses and finally the finishing poses to end your yoga session with relaxation.

Bikram yoga is designed to assist you to lose weight, tone muscles and increase blood circulation. Since this form of yoga helps lower stress levels, it can improve mental clarity and focus. This, in turn, enhances our overall levels of performance both on the job and in our personal life pursuits.

Yoga For Men

Yoga is becoming more popular among men, and for good reason. Besides getting rid of stress and increasing flexibility, it may lower the risk of heart disease, depression, and high blood pressure.

Everyone experiences stress almost everyday, and men are not exempt from this reality. The contemporary man is expected to be physically and mentally strong and fit to cope with stress and to meet the demands of everyday life, together with sports activities. They usually see the gym as a way to achieve a fitter body, and often only do exercises like weight training. Some may do classes but many will run or cycle for the aerobic aspect of training .

Weight training exercises combined with yoga can produce an even better result. Yoga not only brings flexibility, it can also improve concentration, and contribute to weight loss and redistribution of fat. Yoga is a mind - body experience where co-ordination, which is a vital part of a person's health and general well-being, is enhanced. The practice of Yoga can also lessen the risk for age related illnesses such as insomnia, impotence, and prostate conditions.

Yoga is also beneficial in counteracting asymmetries one may acquire through engaging in some sports like tennis and golf by loosening the tightness of the muscles in the hips, shoulders, hamstrings and groins.

For many men the thought of attending a yoga class is intimidating. All those bendy women who make it look easy. Men's bodies are very different to women's and lack the natural flexibility that women have. So if necessary look for a class specifically for men where the emphasis can be on tight hamstrings, sports injuries, tight shoulders and maybe a stomach that needs toning.

Take the opportunity to learn the benefits of yoga aiming not just at improving flexibility but approaching the more difficult and strong yoga poses that men have a natural ability to be able to do well.

Great Price GAIAM AMERICAS for $5.93

Mind-Body-Health ABS Conditioning Review

This DVD contains three challenging abs workouts using three different techniques: yoga, balance ball, and Pilates.

Abs Yoga for Beginners is led by Rodney Yee, and it is appropriate for someone with no prior yoga experience. The workout begins in a seated position and focuses on breathing, then moves on to hands and knees for a back stretch (cat pose). The main part of the practice is performed lying on your back, with moves such as simple yet challenging leg extensions and twists to target the abdominal area. After a quick rise to a standing position, the workout returns to the floor to end with lying relaxation poses. Although the moves become gradually more difficult, this workout would be doable to most beginning exercisers. This is a relatively gentle way to work your abs and build core strength in just over 20 minutes.

Balance Ball Abs is led by Suzanne Deason. It's more challenging than Abs Yoga, and it includes some Pilates-like moves using the stability ball. The workout begins with some basic twists and crunch movements both sitting and lying on top of the ball. You then move to the floor on your back, placing the ball between your legs for a toe tap series both with and without arm movements; next is rolling up from a lying position and doing a twist while in a seated stradle position. You will then lie on top of the ball, face down, for a series of tough moves in a plank position. In the final segment, you again return to lying on the floor on your back, this time placing the ball between your feet for some moves which concentrate on the lower abs area. Suzanne ends the routine with a few minutes of nice back and side stretches over the ball for a total workout time of 26 minutes (not including the instruction/warm-up).

Ana Caban's Pilates Abs is a more challenging workout, and it is geared to those who already have prior Pilates experience. It consists entirely of floor work and begins immediately with the hundred exercise. Ana then moves through a traditional matwork sequence, including moves such as the roll-up, the roll-over, rolling like a ball, the series of five, and the teaser. For many of the moves, Ana adds a more challenging twist--eg, performing several of the series of five exercises with no arms, doing the open-legged rocker with closed legs as well, etc. Because this is an abs-focused workout, the Pilates side kick series and back extension moves are not included. Ana ends the workout with a unique combination move which is a compilation of rolling like a ball, open-legged rocker, the teaser, and lowering down a rope; she then ends with a few brief stretches to bring the workout in at just under 24 minutes. Although Ana does work out with an assistant, Tara, who shows modifications for some of the movements.

Yee, Deason, and Caban are all excellent instructors, and each lead using voiceover. This DVD would be perfect for those who don't like traditional crunches but still want to get great workouts for their abdominals.

The pilates workout is my favorite.

A nice change with beautiful scenes - Customer - Washington, DC United States
All 3 workouts are at outdoors. Each workout is about 25 minutes long plus there are instructions as intro, about 2 minutes long.

I like both pilates and balance ball workouts. Both have very nice scenes, pilates at the beach and ball at near the stream. Both cues are soothing, not like Kathy Smith or Denise Austin. I like both Kathy and Denise but this one makes me a change. Pilates workout has two instructors with modified version. The head instructor has friendly tones. Balance ball workout has only one instructor but work out is easy to follow. All equipments you need are a mat and a ball. If you are in advanced level, this may not for you.

For yoga, the scene is nice, seems like a desert, but I somehow don't like this male instructor. He seems instructional but I like Sara Ivanhoe's Crunch: the Perfect Yoga, which has two workouts. I took one star off for yoga section. (By the way, he is doing yoga at noon... in the desert! )

Yoga For Weight Loss - Achieve a Long, Lean Body Without Dieting Or Excessive Exercise

We start taking a yoga classed for a number of reasons. Often, having been told that we need more exercise, we look for some enjoyable class or experience. No one wants a repeat of high-school gym class. Others come to yoga to look better, lose a little weight, and stretch and lengthen their muscles. Experienced yogis develop a certain look: long, lean and sensuous.

Once we arrive at our first classes and get through the initial awkwardness of where to put our mats, what to wear so as not to look out of place, routine sets in. Some potential yogis drop out from boredom, or are simply looking for a different method to get fit. We who stay with our practice settle into a routine. The initial results that occurred, like becoming aware of muscles we did not know we had, or loosening up a tight and aching back, do not come as quickly.

Despite this, if we stick with it a while longer, something new happens. We start to "get it", and the real changes take place. While our bodies become more firm and suppler at the same time, changes occur in our minds. The mind becomes more firm as well, the discipline of attending practice begins to extend to other areas of our lives. We become more flexible, too. Keeping our commitments but adapting to other's needs.

When we start, often we come to yoga practice with the idea of getting in some physical exercise. Meditation, spiritual goals, and vegetarianism may be the furthest thing from our minds. After a while, we seem to relax our habitual tension, it is worn away slowly by our practice. Daily practice starts to seem like less of an exercise challenge and more of an interesting journey to be completed. Opportunities that were unnoticed before begin to present themselves.

Weight loss happens for many yogis at this point, aside from the few pounds that might have been shed on starting a new exercise routine. Food takes on a different significance in our lives, as we no longer need to take physical sustenance for our spiritual selves. At this point, many tend to experiment with vegetarianism, not as something forced or that we "should" do, but we find our desire for heavy foods and meats decreasing as our practice grows.

Child Yoga - What is All the Fun About?

Many adults have taken up yoga, but yoga has not gained as the same popularity with children. Child yoga can offer many of the same benefits to kids as it does to adults.

What can yoga offer your child?

A healthier body - Childhood obesity is on the rise and one of the main reasons for it is that kids today do not move enough. Yoga is a powerful technique for children to begin moving their bodies in ways that feel good and help them look good. Even if your child is of normal weight, yoga can help her become stronger, gain endurance and flexibility. If your child is involved in another sport, a regular yoga practice is a great cross training activity and it may help him reduce the risk of injuries.

The ability to control stress - Today's children are under enormous stress. They are often over scheduled, they face tough competition in school, they have to deal with peer pressure, and they are trying to find their way in the world. This combination can cause children to become stressed out. Yoga can help your child learn how to relax. When your child learns how to control her breathing and relax during her practice, she can then apply this to her world when she encounters challenging situations.

Increased self-esteem - Yoga is a non-competitive activity. Yet it does offer your child the ability to master challenging poses (especially as he gets older). Your child can feel good about his increasing ability without having to worry about how he compares to everyone else. This experience of success can help your child feel more confident in his ability to be successful in other things too.

Greater concentration -
The breathing and inward focus that is a main component of any yoga practice can help your child learn to focus his mind more effectively. A number of studies have shown that many children who practice yoga, especially those with problems such as ADHD, are able to concentrate for longer periods
of time.

What is a child yoga program like?

The main focus of a child yoga program is on fun. Often the children will pretend to be the animal for which the pose is named. For instance, when they are doing Cat Pose, they become the cat and may even meow. If they are doing Downward Facing Dog with their butts high in the air, they will often bark, as they become the dog. The children are encouraged to fully participate in and enjoy the 'game of yoga.' Sometimes the instructor will create an entire story about the poses that the children are in so as to make the class interesting and to fully engage them. The children don't realize how much they are benefiting from the practice; the only thing they know is that they are having a good
time.

Practicing yoga at home with your child.

While child yoga classes are wonderful, they are often hard to find. Depending on where you live, you might not be able to find a place to take your child. Don't fret. There are a number of excellent videos and books that you can get which will help you become your child's yoga teacher.

*Find a spot in your home where you have room to move freely.

*Establish an atmosphere of fun.

*Put on the video and do the poses together, hopefully with lots of giggles sprinkled in.

*Pick out some poses from a book that you can do - have your child choose some of the them.

*When doing the relaxation exercise, talk your child through it by describing a warm, inviting place such as a quiet field near a bubbling brook with butterflies and singing birds. Use your imagination to create a safe and friendly space and help your child experience it in his imagination.

Child yoga is an enjoyable activity that can provide major benefits to your child. It will help her grow stronger physically, mentally, and emotionally - and she'll have a lot of fun too!

Hatha Yoga - One of the Best Yoga Methods For All Ages

Are you a young athlete who thrives on power workouts? Are you a baby boomer and stressed? Are you a senior citizen who needs to stretch those hamstrings? Hatha Yoga can be the yoga method for you.

Yoga is a field of study which includes a variety of yoga methods to practice. Compare it to music study where you can be a performer or a composer, play violin or trumpet, sing or dance. There are many traditions of yoga practice available today including Iyengar, Bikran, Astanga, Vinyasa, and Hatha. All are wonderful traditions, but one yoga method adaptable for all ages is Hatha Yoga.

Iyengar emphasizes alignment and preciseness of movement. Postures are generally held for longer periods of time.

Bikran, Hot Yoga, uses a set series of twenty-six postures and two breathing exercises. The temperature of the room will be around 105 degrees.

Vinyasa, Flow Yoga, usually emphasizes the yoga series knows as the Sun Salutation. The yogi moves effortlessly and continuously through the series while focusing on the breath.

Hatha Yoga includes most of the features of these other traditions. For this reason, it is one of the best yoga methods for all ages and all types.

If you choose to be a yogi (male) or yogini (female), develop your Hatha Yoga practice around your interests and needs. Your needs will change on a daily basis and will change as you age. Your practice can be stepped up or slowed down accordingly. For a vigorous practice, hold poses longer, move from pose to pose without pausing, or invert with handstand or shoulderstand. Slow down with stretches and twists. Always enjoy corpse pose.

Dandasana is an excellent pose to aid with stretching. In this pose you sit with your legs stretched out in front of you and your hands at your side, palms down. Press the soles of your feet against a door or wall. Begin your movement by stretching your torso up and then down toward your ankles. Lift your arms and grab your legs, ankles or toes. Keep your back flat and your head aligned with your shoulders. Hold the pose for five breaths. As you progress, you may reach the full pose, resting your torso on your thighs.

For quieting the mind and relieving stress at any age, try Uttanasana, standing forward bend. To move into this pose, stand straight with feet about hip width apart. Reach your arms up and then move them down towards the floor, keeping your abdomen tight and your back straight. Stay in this position for five deep breaths. Repeat three times.

A power practice using the Hatha Yoga method could begin with five Sun Salutations as a warm-up. During the next series, add chair pose at the beginning and end. After four legged limb pose, turn to the side for Parsva Dandasana, side staff pose. Do one on each side. There are many choices in the Hatha Yoga method for asanas guaranteed to accelerate your heart rate and tax your strength.

Yoga Essentials - A Checklist

Yoga has been booming in popularity for years now. Offering a way to connect with yourself through exercise and relaxation. However, if you are new to the world of yoga it can get confusing. While many instructors will give you a list of what you will need, and what to expect. Some might not, which will still leave you with the question; what exactly do you need to practice yoga?

Well, with this yoga essentials checklist you no longer have to worry. Simply print it out, and bring it along on your yoga shopping spree. If you'd like to make it an even easier shopping trip, look around the store. There is everything that is a must-have with yoga, and many more accessories that will help to make it much easier.

* First and foremost you need to get at least a couple yoga outfits. While it is a common misconception, that normal workout wear is fine. They can often times be too cumbersome and loose to practice yoga, without having to worry about adjusting your clothes. Most yoga workout wear is snug-fitting, and meant to help you achieve inner peace without worrying about your clothes.

There are shorts, tops, pants, and even capris that are produced for yoga. Giving you a wide variety of clothing to choose from. The one key to selecting the perfect yoga outfit, is by keeping the weather in mind. Chances are, if it is snowing outside you don't want to be caught wearing shorts. However, yoga pants will last throughout the year.

* Second, you have your yoga mat. Whether it is a tai inspired mat or your standard issued yoga mat. They can be found almost anywhere these days, and are affordable for any budget. Some yoga mats have even been made to be somewhat sticky, which will keep the risk of slipping at a minimum. Try going organic! One of the major players in yoga, is living with the world. Giving you more reason to go green.

* The third essential item you must have for yoga, is a few props. Depending on what your instructor plans for the day. It wouldn't be wise to be caught unprepared. From bolsters to meditation stands, there are a lot of props and accessories that are essential for yoga classes. They can be found almost anywhere, from online yoga specialty shops like this one to local shops. However, be mindful of quality. Chances are, if it is too cheaply priced you aren't going to get the amount of use out of them that you'd want.

* The fourth essential yoga item is the yoga bag. Giving you the ability to keep all of your yoga essentials in check. There is nothing worse, than your yoga mat falling into a pile of mud before your lesson. Keep them all in one snug place, all with a little additional style.

* Meditation cushions, while an accessory can help with your yoga practices. Giving you the ability to attune yourself from within. There is nothing worse than a sore bottom on the floor, when you are trying to reach inner peace.

* Yoga dvds to keep your lessons going. Can't make your appointment this week for yoga class? No problem! You've got a couple yoga dvds meant to keep you in the yoga mind set. They are essential for any yoga practitioner, especially those who are short on time.

* Foam blocks, while they would be considered props. Are by far one of the highest priority props for yoga. Thus giving them a spot on the essentials checklist. They can be found separately, or in yoga essential kits.

* A yoga strap is your friend! They are utilized frequently throughout a yoga class, or at home on your own. Much like the foam blocks, they can be found both in a kit or stand alone.

* The yoga ball and hand pump. While they can be found separately, they usually come as a pair. It will give you a leg-up at your class, when you come prepared with these two fantastic yoga essentials.

There are countless amounts of yoga items available. Which means that we have only begun to touch the basics on the yoga essentials checklist. There will always be something that you need or want with yoga lessons. Whether it be on the list or not, it is always a good idea to ask your instructor if you aren't sure what you will need. Chances are, they will have an in-depth list of anything they require. Which will give you the ability to purchase your own, rather than utilizing their hand-outs.

Remember with all yoga items, you should try to go green. Many companies such as this one, will offer both an organic and non-organic version of all of these must-haves. Which will help you to keep our earth clean of chemicals, without having to skip a beat in your yoga lessons. Last but not least, the most essential yoga item is yourself. Keeping your body clean and free of chemicals and in tip-top shape, is by far the most important thing for yoga.

Power of Yoga Review

This is an excellent workout. I was drenched in sweat halfway through the first phase. The instructors voice is not annoying. Too many yoga dvds are not directed at men, and when they are, they tend to have very non-athletic, hairy or iffeminate men demonstrating the poses or very annoying and talkative instructors. This dvd is simple and straightforward. Chris Carmack is a perfect demonstrator of the poses -- he has excellent form and his build, which he received from practicing yoga, gives the workout credibility and is motivating for other men.
I agree that some familiarity with yoga is required because this dvd assumes you know the basic forms -- I woud recommend Jonathan Urla's yogilates dvds as he is very good at describing and teaching form, and once you have that down, you can do this dvd.

Ok, guys and gals....If you are toying with buying this for Chris Carmacks' eye candy....you won't be dissapointed, you'll get the 'workout' you think you'd get from it. Especially the added bonus features where the camera guy decides we need to see Carmack from every angle, close up of body parts, from head to toe...the entire 'package'....Enjoy.

My Eyes Bought This Item!!! - Sydell M. Strong - Chicago, IL
WOW! Is it just me or is this the hottest yoga workout ever? I started to do yoga along with Chris Carmack until I watched him and, "Whoa!" is all I can say. He's real good at what he does, I guess. I don't really know too much about it, but ladies, you don't have to buy it for the exercise. Please buy it for Carmack! He's gorgeous!!!

At the end of the dvd, there are some inappropriate shots of him taken that just makes it all worthwhile. Thank you, Mr. Photographer!

Yoga for Urban Living Review

"Yoga for Urban living is designed to work around your schedule." ~Hemalaya Behl

Hemalaya Behl's Yoga workouts allow you to create your very own yoga sanctuary. Her workouts embody the spirit of yoga. The blue walls speak of emotional stability and the wood floors and plants place an emphasis on natural materials.

While this workout is for mornings, I find it is perfect any time of the day when you have 40 minutes to enjoy a yoga escape.

I first did this workout when I was cooking Indian food and the entire experience was very authentic. I would also recommend the use of a rose oil to balance the mood and encourage beauty.

The exercises start with "OM" and as the word vibrates through your entire being, you will quickly abandon all worry and fear and sink into a state of serenity. There are a few gentle neck stretches and then you breathe away your tension and stress.

I think you can enjoy this workout even more if you place a blanket on the floor and then put your yoga mat on top of the blanket. Then, fold a towel in half and place it in the middle of your mat. This gives you more "comfort" during your workout. I find it is easy to move the towel, but I really enjoy the feeling of a soft towel under my feet instead of always feeling the cold "plastic" feel of the yoga mat.

Hemalaya Behl has a very casual approach. In fact, she is talking you through the entire workout "from a distance." She doesn't actually speak during the workout, but her calming voice drifts in and out of the soundtrack. There is an interesting "rotation" segment and a "sun salutation series" in which she is rather good about telling you what you will do next. If you are finely tuned and ready to move as soon as an instructor tells you what you will be doing next, relax into this calming series of exercises. There is no rush, no place to go, just breathe.

While doing the spine twists, I suddenly realized I was going much deeper into the poses than I had on other yoga workouts. I think you relax so much, that you can go deeper. You will recognize positions like triangle, plow, down dog and cobra. Hemalaya also includes a variety of authentic moves and creative poses. I find her instruction style to be very calming and she has a beautiful spirit.

The pace is just slow enough to relax and just fast enough so you don't get bored. If you are intermediate or advanced, you can always add in a few of your own poses here and there. "Morning Quickie" will encourage joint flexibility and will heat and energize the body. I can't wait to try "Evening Bath."

I really hope she is intending to make more yoga for urban living workouts. How about "Laying out in the Sun," "Waking up to Yoga in Bed," "A Walk Next to the Ocean," "Island Escape," "Sunrise/Sunset," "Sunny Mood - in which she could actually wear that orange outfit," "Winter Escape," and "Sailing into Peace." I could think up more, but I think I've made my point. I really would like to see more Hemalaya Behl workouts. They are unique, authentic yoga escapes.

Hatha Yoga and Mastering Self-Realization

Hatha is only one of the nine main forms of Yoga from India. Each of us begins to practice Hatha Yoga for a variety of reasons. Among these many reasons for practicing - some of us are drawn to Hatha Yoga by the healing aspects, the spiritual journey, a feeling of inner peace, or the joy of physical mastery. No matter what the original reason was, self-realization will become a reality sooner or later.

Among those who practice Yoga, on a steady basis, are people with a variety of religious beliefs. Some Yoga practitioners believe in God, or Gods, and some do not believe in the concept of a single or multiple God entities. Yet, practitioners with a wide variety of spiritual beliefs, practice in the same class in complete tranquility.

Self-realization could be defined as a state of mind, where we are present in the moment. Yogis might describe it as the achievement of higher consciousness, through the realization of the inner-being. Some spiritual teachers say self-realization is a state of seeing, knowing, feeling, and being the soul.

Regardless of your exact beliefs, self-realization in Yoga, is being present for practice. The practice of Hatha Yoga is usually pranayama, meditation, mantra, relaxation, asana, mudra, or a combination of these techniques. The study of any form of Yoga will result in the accumulation of wisdom, understanding, and the clarity of perception.

There are some benefits, which result from long-term Yoga practice and self-realization. To know one's self is to know one's true nature, but it takes time, practice, and work. Each of us has a special purpose, but not all of us find it. To know one's true purpose in life is a mystery to most of us. Through insight, and the development of one's intuition, we can attain our true purpose.

How do we develop the insight to find our true purpose? Spiritual beauty is easy to see. Children are good examples of spiritual beauty. The longer we live, the easier it is to be confused by erroneous information. In the confusion, our visions of a brighter future can become clouded by pessimism. The truth is: Spiritual beauty is within each of us.

The next step is to concentrate and find those thoughts that bring happiness to us. When we find inner harmony, all we have to do is share it with those around us. Each day is a second chance to improve our ways. The result of our continued efforts will put us on a path to achieve goodness.

Top Yoga DVDs For Beginners - A Useful Guide

There are many qualities that make a great yoga video and most people would agree on what they are. Still, some videos don`t pass the test when put through the ringer with yoga fans. Which make it hard to decide what is hot and what is not when you`re looking for top yoga DVDs for beginners.

If you have decided to take up the task of yoga but do not necessarily want to try it in a class with other people around, then you need to know what to look for in a video. And just because you have decided not to do it at a yoga place, doesn`t mean that you should compromise on yoga quality and technique. There are specific things you should look for in top yoga DVDs.

The first thing you should look for is that it offers variety in its program. Does it come with more than one DVD? If not maybe inside there are multiple components to the exercise. You will want to choose one that offers variety in the routine and challenges you to the next level. So that when you are using the DVDs that you can try different things to keep yourself challenged.

The next thing you might want to consider is if the video offers varying ways to do the yoga moves. Are there easy and more challenging steps in the sequences? And does the video offer alternate poses and pose adjustments? Those may be things you will find important when you are doing your routine. Another key element in a great video is doing the yoga teachers demonstrate everything they are talking about. Do they show how it is done step by step and slowly, do they put it in words and have it written for extra clarification. The clearer a DVD is, the more likely you will be able to follow it and do it properly.

If you are doing poses in the wrong way, you could injure your body, or simply be doing poses that have little effect. And the last thing to consider is that yoga videos even when there for beginners are still challenging. Most yoga users are already somewhat fit and have some knowledge of exercise. They will be tricky, but not impossible. Just be prepared to go into the video knowing that and you won`t be disappointed. Think of it as a challenge that you can do! Just combine yoga with another exercise to build up on endurance.

Some top yoga DVDs for beginners to mention are `Power Yoga - Total Body Workout with Rodney Yee`, this video provides detoxifying heat to promote inner strength and stamina. Another video is called `Yoga Express - 4 Short Yoga Workouts` this video is great for people new to yoga because the sessions are short and rewarding. `Yoga Journal - Step by Step Session` with Natasha Rizopoules, is a great video because it claims to be for all levels and that it contains variety to keep boredom away.

When you do finally find a video you like on yoga, remember to keep at it. You might find it frustrating or find it hard to get motivated, but just try and fit it into your routine and give yourself time. With practice the poses will become easier and you will notice yourself whipping into shape.

Raw Yoga; Yoga for the Raw Food Lifestyle Review

This little gem of a practice was first introduced to me by Shazzie in her book, "Detox Your World". While it is aimed towards the raw food, vegan lifestyle, I think that anyone with an interest in yoga would benefit from using this dvd. It clocks in at about an hour and also includes a short raw food seminar presented by David Wolfe. It is surprising that Kim Sol is not a yoga dvd superstar as so many other instructors seem to be. This Ashtanga yoga practice is well-instructed and includes many wonderful and challenging sequences. The setting is beautiful (all outdoors) and there are several other people practicing with her. The pacing of the workout reminded me of Rainbeau Mars' style of teaching. ( She is my absolute favorite instructor.) Since I always use one of Rainbeau's dvds in the mornings, I usually turn to Raw Yoga about once or twice a week, on a day off, just to mix things up a bit.
In the event you are unable to find this practice on Amazon, I recommend checking out some of the raw food sites, as they seem to keep it in stock.

Last-Minute Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Shopping for a gift for Mother's Day does not have to be a stressful event. There are a variety of gifts you can get for Mother's Day that would merely take one trip to a store or one phone call. Here are some ideas.

Gifts that relax and soothe. Most mothers and women in general appreciate ways of relaxing and soothing their minds and bodies. Go to any general retail store and look for aromatherapy candles, eye covers and wraps. Some of the wraps are made to go in the microwave and can be placed on shoulders and the back for pain relief. Call your local spa or beauty salon and buy her a gift card for a massage or pedicure. Buy a set of herbal, relaxing teas such as chamomile.

Bookstores. The big chain bookstores are fun places to spend an afternoon looking for books or hanging out with a cup of coffee. You can buy a gift card so your mom can do this on her own, or pick out anything from a music CD to a yoga mat to wrap up as your gift.

Clothing, Shoes, Jewelry, Cosmetics. It is not a good idea to pick out these things for your mother unless you really know exactly what she wants. Instead buy a gift card to a major, upscale department store such as Macy's or Dillard's where she can find all these things and more.

Edibles. Everyone loves food. Why not take your mother to lunch or dinner at her favorite restaurant? If she does not like going out much then order the food and bring it to her. Don't forget the dessert.

Flowers. Just to be safe you should include flowers with all of the above.

Understanding the Different Types of Yoga

Yoga is becoming a more and more popular activity in the Western world today. The number of places holding Yoga classes is on the increase and there is a plethora of different types of Yoga. With a choice of Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Power Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga and many more it can be easy to get confused

The article will help you to understand the difference between the most popular types of Yoga so you can choose which type is right for you.

Hatha Yoga - in Sanskrit (an ancient classical language of India) "Ha" means "sun" and "tha" means "moon". This type of Yoga is relatively slow paced, gentle type of Yoga and is a good place to start if you are completely new to Yoga and don't know any of the asanas (poses). Like all types of Yoga, Hatha Yoga aims to unite the mind, body and spirit.

Ashtanga Yoga - this is the type of Yoga that I practice on a regular basis and means "eight limbs" in Sanskrit. It's a fast moving, intense style of Yoga practice and is based on a progressive set sequence of asanas, synchronized with the breath. Ashtanga Yoga can be quite physically demanding as you constantly move from one asana in the sequence to the next, so you'll find that it will improve your stamina as well as your flexibility and strength..

Power Yoga - this is a western interpretation of Yoga and is based on Ashtanga Yoga. A Power Yoga class may not necessarily stick to the exact sequence of poses like Ashtanga Yoga does, but it does involve practicing a series of poses without stopping and starting.

Iyengar Yoga - This type of Yoga is based on teachings by B.K.S Igengar and concentrates on the correct alignment and form of the body. Unlike Ashtanga Yoga, there is an emphasis on holding each pose for a long period of time rather than moving constantly from one pose to the next. Iyengar Yoga uses props such as blocks and straps to help align the body into the different poses.

Vinyasa Yoga - Vinyasa means breath synchronized movement and is another fast paced type of Yoga, with an emphasis on breathing. A practice typically starts with sun salutations and moves on to more intense stretching. Throughout the practice each pose is balanced with a counter pose.

Bikram Yoga - otherwise known as "Hot Yoga", is practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees, with a humidity of around 40%. Generally a sequence of 26 different poses is practiced during a Bikram Yoga class and the hot temperature helps to loosen muscles. Due to the high temperature most people sweat a lot during the class and this helps to cleanse the body of toxins.

If you're just starting out or have never done any Yoga before, I recommend trying a few different types of yoga to find out what you like best.

Remember, there's no rule that says you have to stick to one type of Yoga. I like Ashtanga Yoga best, but I also go to occasional Iyengar and Hatha Yoga classes for a bit of variety.
