Yoga for Beginners Review

Exhilirating practice in the SOLAR and LUNAR. Half hour duration for both, I have used it daily on an alternating basis. Satisfying addition to my regular rotation of short on time DVDs, I like Desi's sweet sounding voice (on the voiceover) crystal clear sound, she adds helpful info and sighs when she repeats "to exhale." Excellent production and direction. You'll be on the floor mat for SOLAR practice includes strengthening and re-energizing poses. But, you'll do the sun salutation (Vinyasa Flow) with other poses such as my newly found favorite, "dolphin pose" which goes into the boat pose plus challenges thrown into such moves as the bridge pose with leg lift. Continuing on the floor mat with LUNAR , it's all about stretch & the release of tension here. Included is a lunge series with side bends, front fold (forward bends) series, then alternating with backward bends such as the bridge pose. Honestly, I've been practicing yoga for some time, but only on occasion, and this was appropriate for my level. Not recommended for basic beginners, only because formal practice will give you the expert feedback on your poses.

Not a beginner DVD - Kate - WI

I purchased this DVD because I practiced yoga over 5 years ago and wanted to start doing it again. I don't feel that this DVD is for beginners. It is way too advanced and she does not go into any detail to explain the poses, plus her voice is taped over the segments.

I like exercise DVD's where the instructors' voice is talking throughout the DVD like you are in a yoga class in your own living room, she does not do this.

Actually the thing I find the most distracting and unprofessional is her choice of clothing for the sun portion of the DVD. .... Desiree is a beautiful, very well endowed woman and her yoga top is cut just way too low. Others may not have a problem with it, but I certainly don't think it honors her as a yoga instructor. Maybe it was done to increase sales? Fortunately the second half of the DVD she has on a different top, so no problem there.

Great dvd for beginners - D. Metcalf - Columbia, MD
When I first got this cd, I was 177 lbs and very out of shape. I started doing both Solar and Lunar every day and at first I could not keep up with the video, and would have to stop and start the dvd. But I kept trying and by the end of the first week, I was able to keep up with her (although dolphin pose is still a problem for me).

After using this video and adding 1 mile of jogging per day, I have lost 30 lbs in 4 months, and have never felt stronger. I highly recommend this dvd to people who are just starting out with yoga and want to see results quickly. I will keep using this video because I really like the production quality and Desi's instructions are greeat and her voice is very calming. It's like having yoga and meditation in one dvd.

Yoga DVD - Super Secretary - Cleveland, OH
I am very happy with this yoga DVD. I am doing the lunar part and am able to perform all of the postures. Desiree's voice is very soothing and gives excellent cues so that sometimes I can do the postures with my eyes closed even though I just started doing it. EXCELLENT PRODUCT!

Soccer and Yoga Make a Great Team

It may seem that yoga do not have much in common, but yoga can really help improve your soccer game. Yoga is great for the young and the old, women and men... and even soccer players. Some men have avoided yoga because they think of it has a women's trend, and that it certainly isn't a sport. That's right, yoga isn't a "sport," but practicing yoga can certainly improve how well you play in whichever sport you do play.

Yoga and people who do yoga are certainly not to be laughed at - yoga can be very difficult. Not everyone can do all of the poses, and some poses take years before your body has learned to do them correctly. And, contrary to some people's belief, you can even break a sweat during yoga, especially if you are practicing Bikram yoga. Bikram yoga is yoga performed in a room heated up to 100 degrees Farenheit! Your body becomes more flexible in the heat.

Yoga emphasizes balance, flexibility and mental discipline. Yoga is not just for the body but for the mind, too. Sports are about the mind, too, but sometimes people can forget that. Sometimes people concentrate too much on a skill out on the field but fail to picture it in their minds. Mental imagery can really prepare someone for soccer.

Yoga also loosens the muscles and takes pressure off of your joints. It can really keep you fit. Simple yoga exercises are a great way to loosen up before or after a game or practice.

The amount of injuries that a team has can also be reduced if that team practices yoga. Yoga strengthens muscles in a way that makes it harder to injure them later.

Before you scoff at the idea of doing yoga in addition to your soccer practices, you should try it. Yoga and soccer make a great team, and they can also make your team better. Why not try this ancient art?

Make Fitness a Priority

The modern world is full of phrases and concepts that continually reinforce the idea of instant gratification. Consider how often we can "buy now and pay later" or get promised all kinds of "instant results". The ability to open a cell phone and reach someone half-way around the world or across town is also causing many people to have an inability to be patient or wait for results as well. When such an attitude affects a commitment to exercise it usually results in someone giving up almost as soon as they have started. Fortunately, there are opportunities for personal training in New Jersey that make it much easier to commit to fitness and to succeed as well.

Qualified and certified New Jersey personal training experts will already know that one of the major success "killers" is a lack of commitment to the real process of getting fit. One of their major jobs is to serve as a constant "voice", "motivation", and even "nag" for those who want to lose weight, tone muscle, or just enjoy all-around better health. They know that people don't often make their fitness a priority and they see it as their job to ensure their client remains committed to their plans and goals.

What can someone using personal training in New Jersey expect? They can expect their trainer to view their commitment to daily workouts as "set in stone". They can anticipate that their trainer is going to look at their fitness program in the same manner that a business professional views any ongoing projects. They will consistently review goals, make new plans if previous ones fail, and treat the entire process in a professional and dedicated manner.

Most New Jersey personal training experts are also going to be certified by an array of different associations and organizations dedicated to health and fitness, and it is always a good idea to see if the trainer selected seems to have a focus on some of the same issues connected to you. For example, if you are someone who wants to do a lot of bodybuilding it might be a good idea to see if your trainer is certified through a weightlifting association of some kind. If you are more concerned with toning and conditioning there are several national organizations and associations dedicated to this as well.

If you work with a trainer who has made professionalism a priority, you will find that they will help you to make a serious commitment to your goals through their own focus and enthusiasm too.

Wai Lana's Little Yogis, Vol. 1 Review

I initially was not impressed with this video. As another reviewer mentioned, Wai Lana's manner of speaking reminded me of way the anesthetic affected my speech when I had a tooth extraction.

However, and much more importantly, my 4-year old son really enjoyed it. He was very into watching the children do the poses, and seemed to be tuning out Wai Lana's voice since he never responded to her questions or comments, he was just focused on the poses. Even his brother got down and started doing some of the poses, and that was a first. He has run thru the disc several times on his own, and also had fun deciding the order in which he wanted to do the poses (a feature on the DVD, not sure if it's on the VHS if there is one).

I would recommend this DVD for a younger child just learning yoga.

kid friendly - liquid_glass - Brooklyn, NY USA
I agree with other reviewers that the teacher's voice is a little weird, but the animations are great and the poses are kid friendly. I've found with other kiddie yoga videos that some of the poses are difficult, even for adults.

My son asked to watch this again... - Andrea - Singapore
I was tempted to order it on Amazon due to positive comments from other users and went to Youtube to look at a 3 min clip that someone has uploaded (The Balloon song) and heard Wai Lana's voice which I agree was kind of creepy...so I decided not to get it. Then I came across a copy which was on sale at a local store and got it at around US thinking that I had nothing to lose. Went home, showed it to my two and a half year old boy, and he was fascinated and watched the whole video without stopping. I then forgot about it and a couple days later, he asked to watch the "yoga" tape again! I was surprised. I realize that though Wai Lana's English is accented, her voice is actually quite soothing which relaxed me and probably my son.

horrible! - A. J. Molloy - EARTH!
the woman in the narratin (no offense)
her voice is just horrible-
my kids cant stand it!

Daughter loves it! - Shopper - NY
We got this when my daughter was about 3 or 4. She is 6 now and still loves it. It has made her more aware of her breathing, etc. The reference to animals, the cartoons, and the children on the video make it fun, and Wai Lana's unusual accent makes her smile. My daughter now knows the name of all the yoga poses.
Anything that encourages a lifetime of exercise and caring about your body is good in my eyes. My son just turned 3 and is not as interested in it yet, but I think he will be soon.

Learning Yoga For Your Good Health

For many of us, cranking out a ten-minute mile on a treadmill or pounding the floor of the racquetball court can mean major joint pain. Fortunately, you can cover all three of your major exercise types (aerobic, anaerobic and stretching) through a low-impact activity like yoga.

Yoga is an ancient Indian practiced designed to promote relaxation, health and flexibility. By using a series of poses and breathing techniques, yoga also works on the practitioner's balance, strength and overall health.

It has been shown to reduce blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, diminish back pain and improve cardiovascular health. Depending on the type of yoga you do, yoga can be an aerobic, anaerobic or stretching exercise or all three.

Essentially, yoga tones and stretches all your joints and muscles. Not only does this unique form of exercise deliver physical benefits, it also reduces stress while promoting relaxation. When it comes to aging well, yoga is one of the best activities you can do.

Some types of it are more strenuous than others, so before you sign up for a class or purchase a yoga DVD, you may want to make sure you're choosing a yoga program that's right for you. Keep reading to learn about the five major types of yoga:

Integral Yoga: This is a basic and very gentle form of yoga with a set pattern of postures. The emphasis is on pose control, relaxation and deep meditation. Integral yoga is perfect for beginners.

Ashtanga Yoga: You may see Ashtanga yoga listed as "power yoga." This type of yoga moves fast and focuses on a continuous flow of movement through the traditional yoga poses. By incorporating strength, aerobic exertion and flexibility, Ashtange embodies all three types of exercise.

Kundalini Yoga: This form of yoga is extremely spiritual and tends to focus predominantly on breathing exercises, chanting, relaxation and meditation.

Iyengar Yoga: Iyengar yoga focuses predominantly on positioning and poses that are precise and correct. Using wooden blocks, buckets or straps, Iyengar concentrates on alignment and the actual structure of a pose. Though slow and steady, Iyengar is not recommended for yoga beginners.

Bikram Yoga: Also known as "hot yoga," Bikram yoga is typically done in a room heated to anywhere from 80 to 100 degrees. Vigorous and intense, this form of yoga may be too much for those suffering from respiratory problems, high blood pressure or cardiac issues.

Natural Treatment For Stress & Anxiety - Yoga

You would have definitely heard of yoga, which is one of the hot favorites in the USA today. The Western world is gradually looking into the secrets of youth and health that ancient civilization of the East followed. The Indian civilization is one of the oldest and extremely rich in scientific applications not only in medicine but also in engineering, physics, mathematics, astrology and astronomy among others.

Yoga has four branches that cover the journey of any human being who wishes to attain oneness with the Universe and enlightenment. Walking on this path would also ensure that your body stays free of diseases and human weaknesses without any dependency on food and basic life-supporting comforts. Yoga not only diseases-proofs your body but also tunes your mind to find and understand the Eternal Truth.

1. Kriya yoga or karma yoga - this covers the free will of a human being whereby they make their choices in life and the consequences of these choices on his or her life
2. Bhakti yoga - or attaining liberation through prayer and worship of God
3. Gyana yoga - or enlightenment through learning and acquiring of knowledge, and
4. Raja yoga - or achieving enlightenment with the exclusive help of your mind, ignoring the body completely

You do not need to adopt the austerity of yoga in its complete form. The beauty of yoga is that you can use the exercises this science prescribes without worrying about the rest of the doctrine and still profit from it. Two things are extremely important when you learn yoga:

(i) you need to learn yoga from an accredited and recognized guru or yoga practitioner, and
(ii) you need to do it at the dawn, on an empty stomach, or at bedtime daily - if you want it to really work for you

Yoga can help fight any disease whatsoever that plagues human beings, even cancer. It is excellent for controlling and reversing anxiety. It is also exceptionally potent in treating depression. I am not giving you the asanas (postures) that are prescribed for controlling and treating anxiety and depression because I do not want you to try these exercises on your own. Do not be tempted to buy the much-advertised DVDs from the market unless you have learnt the postures from a guru.

The danger of initiating yoga on your own is that a mistake in getting the right posture might not only be useless, but also might harm you. Every asana is meant to touch, massage and coax into optimal functioning some organ or system in the body. No matter how clear is the DVD or instruction given in a book, you would not be able to see yourself performing the asana; nor would you be able to see whether you are doing it correctly or not. This is where a proficient yoga practitioner and teacher would be able to guide you. Once you learn the asanas correctly and you are confident about it, you can practice it at home alone without anyone's help.

Yoga when combined with meditation can be an exceptional tool to defuse anxiety and depression. It is also extremely beneficial for people who suffer from sleep disorders due to anxiety or depression. You can however, go for yoga without the meditations component and you would be profited nonetheless.
