Learning Yoga For Your Good Health

For many of us, cranking out a ten-minute mile on a treadmill or pounding the floor of the racquetball court can mean major joint pain. Fortunately, you can cover all three of your major exercise types (aerobic, anaerobic and stretching) through a low-impact activity like yoga.

Yoga is an ancient Indian practiced designed to promote relaxation, health and flexibility. By using a series of poses and breathing techniques, yoga also works on the practitioner's balance, strength and overall health.

It has been shown to reduce blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, diminish back pain and improve cardiovascular health. Depending on the type of yoga you do, yoga can be an aerobic, anaerobic or stretching exercise or all three.

Essentially, yoga tones and stretches all your joints and muscles. Not only does this unique form of exercise deliver physical benefits, it also reduces stress while promoting relaxation. When it comes to aging well, yoga is one of the best activities you can do.

Some types of it are more strenuous than others, so before you sign up for a class or purchase a yoga DVD, you may want to make sure you're choosing a yoga program that's right for you. Keep reading to learn about the five major types of yoga:

Integral Yoga: This is a basic and very gentle form of yoga with a set pattern of postures. The emphasis is on pose control, relaxation and deep meditation. Integral yoga is perfect for beginners.

Ashtanga Yoga: You may see Ashtanga yoga listed as "power yoga." This type of yoga moves fast and focuses on a continuous flow of movement through the traditional yoga poses. By incorporating strength, aerobic exertion and flexibility, Ashtange embodies all three types of exercise.

Kundalini Yoga: This form of yoga is extremely spiritual and tends to focus predominantly on breathing exercises, chanting, relaxation and meditation.

Iyengar Yoga: Iyengar yoga focuses predominantly on positioning and poses that are precise and correct. Using wooden blocks, buckets or straps, Iyengar concentrates on alignment and the actual structure of a pose. Though slow and steady, Iyengar is not recommended for yoga beginners.

Bikram Yoga: Also known as "hot yoga," Bikram yoga is typically done in a room heated to anywhere from 80 to 100 degrees. Vigorous and intense, this form of yoga may be too much for those suffering from respiratory problems, high blood pressure or cardiac issues.

Natural Treatment For Stress & Anxiety - Yoga

You would have definitely heard of yoga, which is one of the hot favorites in the USA today. The Western world is gradually looking into the secrets of youth and health that ancient civilization of the East followed. The Indian civilization is one of the oldest and extremely rich in scientific applications not only in medicine but also in engineering, physics, mathematics, astrology and astronomy among others.

Yoga has four branches that cover the journey of any human being who wishes to attain oneness with the Universe and enlightenment. Walking on this path would also ensure that your body stays free of diseases and human weaknesses without any dependency on food and basic life-supporting comforts. Yoga not only diseases-proofs your body but also tunes your mind to find and understand the Eternal Truth.

1. Kriya yoga or karma yoga - this covers the free will of a human being whereby they make their choices in life and the consequences of these choices on his or her life
2. Bhakti yoga - or attaining liberation through prayer and worship of God
3. Gyana yoga - or enlightenment through learning and acquiring of knowledge, and
4. Raja yoga - or achieving enlightenment with the exclusive help of your mind, ignoring the body completely

You do not need to adopt the austerity of yoga in its complete form. The beauty of yoga is that you can use the exercises this science prescribes without worrying about the rest of the doctrine and still profit from it. Two things are extremely important when you learn yoga:

(i) you need to learn yoga from an accredited and recognized guru or yoga practitioner, and
(ii) you need to do it at the dawn, on an empty stomach, or at bedtime daily - if you want it to really work for you

Yoga can help fight any disease whatsoever that plagues human beings, even cancer. It is excellent for controlling and reversing anxiety. It is also exceptionally potent in treating depression. I am not giving you the asanas (postures) that are prescribed for controlling and treating anxiety and depression because I do not want you to try these exercises on your own. Do not be tempted to buy the much-advertised DVDs from the market unless you have learnt the postures from a guru.

The danger of initiating yoga on your own is that a mistake in getting the right posture might not only be useless, but also might harm you. Every asana is meant to touch, massage and coax into optimal functioning some organ or system in the body. No matter how clear is the DVD or instruction given in a book, you would not be able to see yourself performing the asana; nor would you be able to see whether you are doing it correctly or not. This is where a proficient yoga practitioner and teacher would be able to guide you. Once you learn the asanas correctly and you are confident about it, you can practice it at home alone without anyone's help.

Yoga when combined with meditation can be an exceptional tool to defuse anxiety and depression. It is also extremely beneficial for people who suffer from sleep disorders due to anxiety or depression. You can however, go for yoga without the meditations component and you would be profited nonetheless.

Infertility Yoga - Boost Your Fertility and Get Pregnant With Infertility Yoga

Infertility yoga is a gentle way to enhance your fertility, while relaxing your mind and body and strengthening your reproductive organs. Yoga is an ancient tradition specifically practiced for general health and well-being and, it is particularly helpful for resolving difficulties with fertility and sexuality.

Yoga works with the mind and the body, relaxing the mind and exercising the body to bring balance to both. It can be effective for women with blocked fallopian tubes, hormone imbalances or other fertility challenges, and it is also helpful for helping women to relieve stress, relax and prepare mentally and physically for conception.

The yoga poses used in infertility yoga may appear to be predominantly for the female, but they are good for both partners, and it can be nice to do the exercises together. The poses focus mainly on the hips and pelvis where we support the physical body and hold the physical expression of emotion, both physical and mental tension. They will also help blood flow and balance the hormones.

Another aspect of infertility yoga is increasing the flow of oxygen and blood to the brain, as this is where the hypothalamus and pituitary gland are located. These two glands release hormones into the blood, so it is important to incorporate yoga poses that nourish these important glands, and improve the way they function.

Many couples are concerned that they will not be able to do any of the yoga exercises, as they have never done yoga before. You don't need to be as flexible as a yogi master to do infertility yoga. The exercises are very gentle and you should not force or push the body beyond your own limits. With repeated exercising, you will notice your flexibility will improve quite naturally.

Another concern is the cost. I would recommend you purchase a DVD that explains how do to the yoga positions, but apart from that, there's not much else you nee. All you need to perform these poses is a mat or rug, some loose comfortable clothing and a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. There is a Fertility Yoga DVD available to guide you through the movements, and plays beautiful relaxing music. If you don't have the DVD, some quiet, gentle music is optional.

Breathing is fundamental to yoga, as it helps you to relax, and increases the flow of oxygen into the body. So when practicing yoga, start breathing more deeply and slowly, and maintain this rhythm of breathing through out the session, as best you can. While you are lying there adjusting your breathing, mentally scan your body, releasing any tension by tensing and relaxing, particularly your anus and the reproductive area.

Bikram Yoga - Hot Yoga For Weight Loss

You have probably heard people talking about it in your workplace, in the subway, in the coffee shop. That it really works. That it made them lose weight. Yes, Bikram yoga is hot. It may seem everybody else has tried it but you.

But before you dive in, it is important to be more informed. Because when people say Bikram is a hot yoga, they do not only mean it's well-liked and in style. They also mean it literally. A session in Bikram yoga means exposure to elevated temperatures-105 degrees and about 40% humidity-for 90 minutes. It will make you sweat buckets.

It's All about Sweating?

Now there's a little confusion surrounding the sweating part. Some say sweating alone does not make you lose weight. Or it does but only temporarily. Once you drink fluids to rehydrate then you regain all the weight you just lost.

Well, yes and no. Yes, excess weight is not something you can simply sweat off without proper physical exertion. No, sweating is not the sole reason for weight loss when you do Bikram yoga. It is only part of the reason.

The Bikram "Glow"

Bikram involves 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises, which as you carry out inside the heated room give you a total body workout. Your heart rate increases. Your muscles, warmed and flexed, get stronger with regular practice and eventually burn more fat easily.

Bikram yoga practitioners have lean, toned bodies yet they don't look old. They don't lose the glow in their skin, which is what typically happens when you lose weight, and actually look younger than before they took up Bikram.

The Bikram "glow" is physiological in nature. The heavy sweating involved in the sessions detoxifies your body of harmful toxins and improves your blood circulation, both of which in turn increase your metabolism. Your immune system is fortified because the output of the cells whose job is to fight infections is increased.

Attuned Bodies and Minds

As an end result, your bodily systems will work in better harmony. It is not unusual that people who do Bikram yoga do not suffer from constipation anymore. They sleep better. Their appetites are normalized, all those cravings for unhealthy food vanished. They genuinely feel better.

True, Bikram yoga can be challenging because you have to be able to stand the heat. But you also have to realize that those who do must have developed great endurance and will power. Though at some point, when they were just starting out, they were all novices just like you now.

So you see, people who steadily lose weight through Bikram yoga do so because their bodies and minds are attuned to losing weight.

Pre Natal Yoga - The Importance of Listening to Your Body

As with many things during pregnancy, listening to your body and what it is telling you when you are doing yoga is important. Pre natal yoga can be a great way to stay healthy and flexible while you are pregnant but you need to make sure that you are doing it the right way.

Even as early as the first trimester, your body may not be about to do all of the yoga poses that it used to do. Even though your body may not look very different during the first trimester, it certainly feels different. From the very beginning of pregnancy, your body starts to undergo major changes. Listen to what those changes are telling you when you do pre natal yoga. Your body always knows when you are doing too much, all you need to do is listen to it. This is even more important while you are pregnant.

As you move into the second trimester of your pregnancy, your body begins to show more outward signs of pregnancy. At this stage of pregnancy you may feel more energy and you may get the urge to overdo it in your pre natal yoga practice. At this stage it is important to keep in mind that you need to be careful and tune into what your body can realistically handle. At this stage, you will probably need to begin modifying yoga poses to fit your new body size.

Doing pre natal yoga can get to be the most challenging during your third trimester of pregnancy. By this time, your body has changed dramatically and what your body can do starts to get much more limited. The ways in which your body can bend and move is very limited by the time you reach your third trimester of pregnancy. It may feel like you can hardly do any yoga poses. The flexibility that pre natal yoga can offer is still important so try to stick with your yoga practice. Understanding and accepting your limitations at this stage in your pregnancy and being gentle with yourself is important. Listen to what your body is telling you about what it can and cannot do at this stage. What your body is telling you may feel very limiting but try to focus on what you can still do rather than what you cannot.
