QiGong: A Guide to Well Being Review

I really feel this DVD is great. I find the program to be easy to learn, easy to understand, and I believe it can be beneficial to many people. The only problem with it is, it's poorly titled. If it had a very simple and clear name like Keith Jeffery's "4 minute fitness", sales would probably soar and it would find it's way into the hands of the people who really need it. Of course, there are far more complex and longer Chi Gong programs on the market. But, this simple 5 minute form is perfect for someone just getting started in the art of Chi Gong or for someone looking for a simple exercise routine, especially if exercise has not been part of their life. It's quick, it takes very little space to do, and can be done almost anywhere provided a person can stand. The best part is, it's simple enough that it can actually be learned from a DVD. A lot of programs are frustrating and can not be learned without personalized instruction. This isn't one of them. If you buy it and follow along with it, you'll learn it. A great Program, don't miss out.

are you serious??? - Hundun - Sacramento, CA
i am SO glad i was able to borrow this video from my local library! yet even though i didn't waste any money, i feel the need to mourn those 15 minutes that i will never get back.

the first time around i honestly thought the dvd was defective or something to just cut out and return to the menu screen before the exercises were even presented. on second look, however, i realized that the warm up WAS the exercises!

if you know how to loosen up your ankles and knees, stretch your neck, wring out your arms, and shake your body a little, then you don't need to buy this video. with the exception of shaking, which most people can do instinctively, these are NOT qigong exercises! they're literally joint loosening warm-ups that you may find at the start of ANY exercise class.

he should be ashamed of himself for making this video; there is NO defensible reason to label this qigong, and then to offer NO substantive content at all. not even breathing. NOTHING.

please, please, don't waste your money.

Only basic exercsies done in only in 5 min - Lena, LMT - Nassau, NY
I have several Qi Gong dvds, I started with "Discovering Chi" with Linda Modero which has cured me of several ailments & I always feel calm/energized after. I also love Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming's 8 Pieces of Brocade & Crane Style Soft & Hard Qi Gong. I enjoyed Francesco and Daisy Lee-Garripoli's Beginners & also their Cleaning Qi Gong dvds.

This DVD's has great production quality, good lighting, sound, even some cute unneeded fade in/out effects. Karl Ardo has a soft, patience nice presence, but not very calm, he seems a bit nervous. He teaches only as a voice over.
This DVD's teaching segment is only 8 min & contains only movements to open up the joints in the ankles, knees, hips, sacrum, spine, elbows, wrist & neck. Basically rolling or shaking each of the joints, such as rolling the ankles, knee circles, hip circles, bouncing, neck side to side & for the spine, even slow uludations like bellydance though the whole spine & it isn't done fluidly. The reason it's longer is it goes in slow motion for each exercise & zooms in so all you see is his hand or foot. These are very simple, easy movements & does not need such intense video help.
With all these attention to physical detail, you'd think he'd give more information about how the Asian people came up with this idea or even the specific benefits of each of the moves. The most atrocious thing is he neglects to tell you to keep the tongue at the roof of the mouth to joint the governing & conception vessels that run in the middle of the torso along the front & back & meet there to keep the energy flowing better.
What bugs me the most, in terms of "Discovering Chi" Linda does ALL these movements, but it's only the WARM UP on her beginner's DVD.
The other segments, Practice & Daily is just a 5 min each redo of the movements with him just saying the names of the movements. They both look very similar, just different music.
Karl teaches very patiently, very slowly even for those who's minds might be foggy/unclear from bad food or medications, but others might find too slow & boring. I was getting bored even though it was only 9 min.
I did not feel an increase of energy at all. As I said, these seem more a warm up of Qi Gong & that's it. You cannot get a good energy boost from Qi Gong in 5 min or less unless there is specific deeper teaching of meditative intention, more pronounced stretching of tendons, etc. Don't say I didn't warn you & don't assume Qi Gong doesn't work because this DVD didn't help you.
I might be more interested in future dvds if his teachers taught instead of him.

I love this one-of-a-kind DVD - Dr. M. Dixon - Tucson, AZ USA
This qigong practice is one I use often! It is perfect for when you are feeling something is off about your energy but only have 5 minutes to do something about it. The practice is basically opening up all the joints and then bouncing. It takes less than 5 minutes and it really makes a difference. One of the other things I like about this DVD is that it has the daily practice separate from the explanation/instructions so you don't have to rehear all the explanation every time unless you want to do so. If you are looking for the more typical 1/2 hour to hour meditative slow moving qigong, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you are looking for another tool to have to help manage your daily energy life, this is a keeper and I highly recommend!

Digestive Disorders - Yoga Management

According to Ayurveda, a Science of life, the most common digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, indigestion, acidity, sluggish metabolism, diabetes, chronic tiredness can be controlled by a regular yogic practice. It believes that Agni (digestive fire) is the chief protector of the body and ama is the real cause of the disease

Yoga postures tone every area of the body including the digestive system and cleanse the internal organs of toxins. It also dissolves physical stress and calms the mind thereby rejuvenating the body which leads to an improved digestion.

Yoga balances all three doshas, and different poses have different effects. Forward bending postures cool Pitta dosha. Twists are good for Kapha because they stimulate digestion. Backward bends are heating, and thus balancing to Vata types, as long as the person has the strength to do them.

** One of the digestive benefits of yoga is that it restricts the blood flow to certain parts of the body while holding some poses. Once these poses are released, this area of the body is then flooded with blood and thus, oxygen. Oxygen has healing properties and is necessary for proper function of the digestive organs.

** Forward bends increase the space in the abdomen and facilitate the release of entrapped gases. These poses heat the front of the body and cool the back body.

** Regular focused breathing can also open up blocked areas of energy in the body- blocked energy, or chi, in the stomach/intestines, is often the cause of digestive problems.

** Yoga calms us, which in turn relaxes the digestive system and leads to more effective elimination.

** Several asanas like cobra, Hero, Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose), Supported Supta Sukhasana, and an upright variation of Parsvottanasana (Side Stretch Pose) and Dhanurasana are practiced to treat digestive disorders. Some of these poses makes you put entire weight on stomach, thus tones stomach muscles and makes these stronger as well as to digest food better and cleanse system of left over food, etc

** The commonly used ayurvedic medicine to fight digestive disorders are Indukantam qwath tablet, aptizoom syrup, indukantam ghrit, hinguvachadi tab, dadimashtaka churna, chitrakadi tablet, kalyana gulam, dasmoola haritaki leha.

Check Out Yoga Booty Ballet Live Body Sculpting Bollywood Style

Yoga Booty Ballet Live Body Sculpting Bollywood Style Review

This routine is definitely my favorite Yoga Booty Ballet DVD. It doesn't have the intensity of Hip Hop Abs or Go-Go, but the choreography is so beautiful and fun to do! I find the movements have a flow that is unparalleled in the other YBB workouts.

My only nitpicks are
a). The fact that they stop the dance part of the workout in the MIDDLE of the routine. I want to finish it!
And
b). They let the clumsy, ugly guy (who is also in Hip Hop Abs) stand in the back and pretend to be involved in the workout when he's really ogling the ladies. Why is he there when he obviously cannot do a step right to save his life?! ...Luckily, he is hidden by the group for most of the time.

Overall, if you want a fun, low impact, easy to follow DVD which will make you feel like "the beautiful goddess that you are", go for this one!

Fun dance routine - C. Hurley - Kalamazoo, MI
This is a fun dance infused workout, you do need a resistance band for the strength portion which I didn't know when I first tried it.

Influenced by Bollywood but not Bollywood - K. M. Ramotar -
I love Bollywood workouts and own many. When I got this dvd I was dissapointed. I really don't see this being "bollywood dance" I can see where it could be inspired by bollywood like the mudra and such but if you are looking to dance like a bollywood movie, this isn't the dvd.
You get your heart rate up fast when they start the dancing because you just right into it learning the moves as you go but then once you learn the last move you don't go through the dance all the way it just cuts to the strengthening section. The cardio could have lasted longer, a lot longer.
If your looking for a dance dvd where you don't learn any real moves just are told when to raise your hands stomp your feet and spin this is for you.
If you don't like cheesy faces and overdramatics avoid it because the blonde girl on the right will annoy you to insanity!

So fun! - Laura J. Michaels -
Yoga Booty Ballet Live Body Sculpting Bollywood Style This DVD is a blast from start to finish. It has a short warm-up section with Yoga Booty Ballet's signature mudra and intention-setting. Then it's off to the cardio which gets your heart pumping. The choreography is a little tricky but having a little challenge makes it all the more rewarding once you "get it." There are a few turns, some bellydance type moves, scooting, etc. It's very high energy and the instructors are enthusiastic without being overly-perky and annoying. It helps to have resistance bands for the sculpting section but they aren't absolutely necessary. I liked the sculpting because you do moves intended to tone the thighs which is my problem area. I highly recommend this DVD. It is highly unique and very fun.

Do You Need A Yoga Exercise Mat

One of things I like best about yoga, you don't need any specialized equipment. If you are exercising on carpet, you don't even need a mat. However, a yoga mat is a great piece of equipment to have, and some people wouldn't even think of trying yoga exercise without using a mat.

Yoga mats come in a variety of types, styles and thicknesses. A typical yoga mat has a sticky surface to help with friction when obtaining your poses. Some yoga mats are thicker than others, and these can really help when you get on your knees.

Yoga mats come in a multitude of colors and patterns, so you can express your personality (and find your mat when it's time to pack up and leave the gym). This isn't George Orwell's 1984, you aren't stuck with the same color and pattern as every other yoga mat. If fact, you can even have your T-shirt match your yoga mat.

If you are just starting out, you really don't need a yoga mat, especially if you are working out at home. Most gyms will lend you a yoga mat or rent one to you. But if you are serious about yoga exercise, you should invest in a good quality yoga exercise mat as soon as you can. After all, do you really want to use a mat that some one else has sweated on?

The great thing about a yoga exercise mat, they are inexpensive. It is possible to buy a pretty good yoga mat for $15 to $20. Of course, you can spend a lot more for a mat, but it really isn't necessary.

The type of yoga mat you purchase depends on several factors, including what type of yoga you practice. If you are using the more active and fast pace exercises, you may want thicker mat. You may also find the thicker yoga exercise mat useful if you are suffering from joint problems.

There are lots of different types of yoga exercise mats available, and you should find the mat that is right for your needs.

Yoga for Children with Special Needs Review

I also ordered a couple of videos for Allison. One is a Yoga video for special needs children. The other gives hints on how to use Occupational Therapy for special needs children. The other day Allison was in a strange mood and nothing would make her happy. She was unusally whiny and kept asking for anything and everything. We put the yoga video on, and did the yoga poses. We encouraged her to do them with us and helped her get into the positions. She was a different person after that, extremely calm and at ease. We will definitely use this video often! The actual Yoga part is only about 30 minutes, but there are other sections afterwards, including a small dance section, and a small massage section.

We got these videos from www.trpwellness.com.

The Importance of Yin Yoga

Don't let the name fool you. Yin yoga by name may appear to be a less strenuous form of yoga, and in comparison to styles such as ashtanga or bikram yoga, it is. But nevertheless, it is very challenging in its own way. This does not require the muscular endurance that ashtanga and bikram, rather it requires being able to hold certain positions for at least 3-5 minutes at a time. Some may hold positions for up to 20 minutes. Sounds easy, but it is far more challenging than it seems.

What is Yin Yoga?

If you were to think of the more "power" styles of yoga, such as ashtanga, as "yang" yoga, the term "yin" yoga makes perfect sense for what it concentrates on. Yang yoga's primary focus is muscle lengthening and muscle contraction. The emphasis is on the muscle itself. Yin yoga focuses on working the connective tissues, such as the ligaments and tendons. More specifically, the ligaments and tendons of the pelvis, hip and lower back area are worked.

Why Should You Practice Yin Yoga?

During a yang practice, or even regular exercise such as jogging or resistance training, we are engaging our muscles in repetitive movements. This repetition breaks the muscle fibers down in order to build back up. This scenario is ideal for toning the muscles to give them definition. However, this is just part of the puzzle. Making sure the tissues that connect the muscle to the bone are healthy and malleable is extremely important.

These positions help to ensure the connective tissues are properly aligned. In addition, this strengthens the joints by creating space that allow for better and safer range of motion. This reduces the risk of potential injury that exercises focusing on muscular contraction can cause. When the joints have accumulated tension, the risk for injury is high if it is not addressed. Yin yoga can pay a huge part in releasing joint tension and opening the body.

When Should You Practice Yin Yoga?

Ideally, the greatest benefits of Yin yoga are reaped when the muscles are not warm. The perfect time would be just upon waking. The reason being is that warm muscles will take the impact of the stretching away from the connective tissues, which is what you want to be working. You may also incorporate a Yin yoga session right before a regular exercise session or before a Yang yoga session. For women, the time of menses is also a great time to incorporate a Yin yoga session, as it is said to help conserve necessary energies.

Incorporating a yoga practice in which the focus is on strengthening and opening the joints and connective tissues is very important in reducing the risk of injury. It is also important to ensure bone health as our bodies age. Most exercise programs focus on working the muscles, but making sure the other tissues are worked simultaneously ensures you get a well-balanced, highly beneficial work out. This balance will keep our bodies healthy for years to come.

Teaching Hatha Yoga - Steps to Professional Development of Yoga Teachers

Over the past two decades, professional development of Yoga teachers has grown, in parity, with the volume of new students. Let's look at some easy steps any Yoga instructor can take toward taking his or her knowledge and teaching skills to new heights.

Before you make a decision toward developing your skills, you may want to compile a list of areas where you feel you might want to go. Consider your performance reviews, feedback from program coordinators, students, or colleagues, and the input of your mentor, if you have one.

Ultimately, it is your decision to choose which direction of development or education to go in. If you have a wide variety of needs, you have to decide which ones are a priority - based upon a mix of rational thought and intuition.

Assess all of your options before choosing a path toward continuing education. When it comes to education, some of us are like kids in a candy store. We have difficulty making a decision about which course to take or which direction to go in.

Yet, there is a simple way to decide your direction. What are your students' needs? After you become a certified Yoga teacher, your decisions are based upon the needs of your students. If your students are a particular age, have similar health conditions, or there is a predominant ailment among them, this may be your calling.

On the other hand, if you cannot see a particular need, there are many training methods, and many areas of Yoga, where we could use improvement. Some skills are on the fringe of teaching, such as communication, public speaking, and marketing. One teacher may feel these skills are not necessary, while another may see a value in improving areas, where he or she needs help.

Most importantly, choose an option that suits your specific situation. Finances and time should be given consideration. Do you have the means to travel, a budget for continuing education, or the time needed to attend an intensive for Yoga teachers? Are you a self-starter, who can learn from books, DVD's, CD's, and online sources?

This brings to light a variety of choices Yoga instructors have when taking courses to enhance their education and professional growth. While training intensives are an option, so are home study, independent study, online courses, and correspondence courses.

No matter which direction you choose, professional development will be the end result.
