Shiva Rea Starter Pack (Amazon Exclusive Bundle) Review

This set is a fabulous way to start practicing yoga. Flow Yoga for Beginners is incredibly relaxing. Although Shiva Rea can surely bend like a pretzel, rather than showing off, she models appropriate beginner poses with instructions on modifications, breathing techniques, and tips for listening to your body. Creative Core Abs is a wonderful ab workout. If you allow yourself to let go and be creative. You will likely learn to move your body in ways it has not moved since you were a small child- and somehow this is really refreshing. When I started Creative Core and Upper Body I was shocked to hear that I would be doing 108 push ups. I thought, no way, this lady is crazy- but she gets you through them and leads you energizing stretches- surprisingly my arms do not get very sore after doing these exercises- which, I guess, speaks to the importance of the stretching. Creative core and lower body is also a good workout, but I honestly do not use it as much as the other four. I love Yoga Trance Dance for when I am stressed out or overwhelmed I am not sure if it is a great aerobic workout, because I am not sure that the point of it is to be a workout... but it makes me feel a lot better.

Shiva Rea Starter Pack (Amazon Exclusive Bundle) Overview

Shiva Rea - Creative Core Abs

"The Madonna of yoga, exuding creativity and inspiration" —Yogi Times

Good things flow from a strong core: a long lean torso, a healthy back, a positive flow of energy that benefits every aspect of your life. Now, one of the yoga world’s top female teachers shows you an enlightened way to a powerful core. Unlike repetitive conventional abs work, Shiva’s fluid yoga-based approach awakens your creativity and inner fire, building strength and grace in the same way that surfing, rock climbing, or dancing does—while you’re enjoying yourself, not counting the minutes until it’s over. The program includes three flowing segments, which can be done all at once or individually.

Filmed at White Sands National Park, the program was directed by James Wvinner and shot in HD by Hollywood’s Sion Michel (Memoirs of a Geisha). Beautiful, effective, inspiring. It’s an abs workout you’ll look forward to doing again and again.

Shiva Rea - Yoga Trance Dance

Shiva Rea has been teaching Yoga Trance Dance for more than 10 years. Now, for the first time, her most popular workshop is available to anyone who wants to experience celebration, rejuvenation, and creative joy through movement.

Appropriate for all ages and experience levels, Yoga Trance Dance begins with prana-initiating yogasanas, flowing into an exploration of free-form, breath-driven movement to free your creative life force and cultivate embodied freedom. It features the Yoga Matrix format, which allows you to customize your practice by choosing and organizing portions of the program to suit your needs every time you use the DVD.

Filmed at White Sands National Park, the program was shot in HD by Hollywood’s Sion Michel (Memoirs of a Geisha) and directed by yoga teacher and fashion photographer James Wvinner for an inspiring look and feel unlike any other yoga or fitness video.

Shiva Rea - Flow Yoga for Beginners

A superb introduction to one of the most beneficial and rewarding forms of yoga

Flow yoga, also called vinyasa yoga, combines flowing movement with rhythmic breathing for a dynamic mind-body workout. Like a moving meditation, flow yoga unites mind, body, and breath. Your mind clears, your body calms, even as your pulse quickens.

Renowned and innovative flow yoga teacher Shiva Rea leads this introductory practice, filmed amid breathtaking scenery on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. She begins with a seated mediation that teaches you how to link breath with movement.

Three more segments introduce her flowing approach to classic poses. Transitions from pose to pose are graceful and easy. You may not have Shiva's flexibility (yet), but you can follow her lead in ways that work for you. Feel yourself becoming stronger and more supple. Sense your new energy and find the fluidity that has always been yours.

Shiva Rea Starter Pack (Amazon Exclusive Bundle) Specifications

Shiva Rea - Flow Yoga for Beginners

The title, Flow Yoga for Beginners, is slightly oxymoronic, as "flow" yoga, at least as practiced by many yogis and yoginis, is by its very nature more aerobic, vigorous, and difficult than the yoga undertaken by most beginning students. But leave it to Shiva Rea, whose growing series of home videos is arguably the best on the market, to reconcile those two disparate factors--for the most part, anyway. Rea defines the flow concept as "the ability to move freely in an unbroken string of awareness"; in more pedestrian terms, it’s a continuous sequence of poses, one moving freely and naturally to the next, which tends to generate heat and deepen control of the breath. The breath, specifically ujjayi pranayama, is the centerpiece of Rea’s introduction to this 70-minute program; her instructions in the use of this basic but hard-to-explain technique are excellent. Thereafter, she spends about 20 minutes on backbends (from simple standing and lunging backbends to poses like cobra, bow, locust, and camel, which can be very challenging for inexperienced students); this segment also includes a few twists. Next, the "Relaxing Flexibility Flow" sequence consists mostly of counterposes such as the "happy baby" and badakonasana (cobbler’s pose), while the "Standing Pose Flow," the longest and best of the lot, focuses on poses including and derived from virabadrasana II (aka warrior II), one of the common standing positions. It’s all good, but while Rea provides detailed instruction and simpler variations for many poses, genuine beginners would do well to study the program closely before attempting it; and even then, poses like chaturanga dandasana (a lowered pushup) are rarely taught in beginners classes, even in their easier versions. As for the lush Hawaiian scenery, well, great, but the practice of hatha yoga ultimately depends on going inside, even to the point of doing it with eyes closed. Still and all, while it’s not quite up to the standards of Shiva Rea’s other videos, Flow Yoga for Beginners is a winner. --Sam Graham

Shiva Rea - Creative Core Abs
It's hard to say how Shiva Rea would react to being called "the Madonna of yoga," a phrase that appears on the cover of Creative Core Abs. But one thing is certain: the popular, California-based yogi's several DVD programs are uniformly first-rate, and this one is no exception. Roughly defined as the area between the upper thighs and lower ribcage, with particular focus on the abdominals and lower back, the core is "more than our physical center," says Rea; it is "our inner fire," the seat of our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual selves (not to mention the center of a great many yoga poses). Mindful that core exercises are for many of us "a duty, not a pleasure," Rea has designed three different programs (ranging from seven to seventeen minutes) that aim to offer a more creative, innovative approach to the work. The "Water Core" segment includes various seated movements, many involving the arms as well; there are also sequences done on the back, somewhat akin to the bridge pose, as well as the "water wheel," which combines lifting the hips while alternately extending the legs. The "Spontaneous Core" section incorporates some of the previous movements with several new ones, while the "Fire Core," the longest of the three, blends very challenging poses such as chaturanga and the forearm plank with familiar standing asanas like the Warrior II. As usual, the musical accompaniment is effective but not intrusive, while the setting (New Mexico's White Sands National Park) and the HD cinematography by Sion Michel (a camera operator for Memoirs of a Geisha) are stunning. None of that may matter much while you're flat on your back, struggling to understand what it means to treat a pose as if you're "skateboarding on the empty bowl of your pelvis," but Creative Core Abs is likely to yield satisfying results for those who stick with it. --Sam Graham

Power Yoga: Fat Burner Review

I just got into doing yoga 3-4 times a week during the last 6 months, and I bought this and 2 other dvds to use while my teacher is on a summer retreat.

This workout is quite challenging, and always leaves my heart pounding and my entire body covered in sweat! Like the some of the other reviewers, I liked that Adrienne has a choice of a 20, 40, or 60 minute workout on the tape. I also like that the folks on the video all look like regular people and not like hardcore yogis (which is nice for someone like me who is trying to get back into shape!)

Even though Adrienne is a bit more like an aerobics instructor than a mellow yogi, I like the workouts that she has put together, and that she enhances a lot of traditional yoga positions with some other non-yoga movements to keep your heart rate going. This is definitely not for someone who hasn't worked out at all in a while, or who doesn't know any yoga at all--I think it would be way too challenging for a total novice to keep up with.

The things that I didn't like about this tape are that Adrienne doesn't participate in the workouts, but rather just walks around and directs her students. This isn't a bad thing, but since I'm always working on trying to improve my poses, I like to see people doing yoga who really know what they're doing.

In addition, for the first 5-8 minutes of the dvd, there are commercials for Adrienne's merchandise, and you cannot skip through it. That is EXTREMELY annoying, especially for someone who wants to use this tape many times.

The one weird thing about this tape is that in the "bonus features" section, you see Adrienne by herself in the studio, doing some advanced yoga positions, but it doesn't seem meant for you to follow along--she does it without talking and there's no explanation. It goes on for about 5 minutes and then just ends. Kind of strange, I think.

And the best part.. it's yoga! So the workouts are low impact and reach every part of your body. You'll feel so great after doing them, you'll want to come back for more! Finally, a workout program that you'll want to follow! Practice yoga with Adrienne and you'll look better, feel better and improve your life.

great workout - C. Hernandez - Vancouver, WA, USA
This DVD includes 3 completely different workouts, each of them challenging in their own way. They all use sun salutes to warm up, but each workout uses it in a different way. I appreciated the creativity and the challenge. I like Adrienne Reed as an instructor because she is very straightforward, and describes each movement thoroughly, with good cueing before something new is about to happen. I am not into the meditative, chanting part of yoga, just a nice, hard workout, and I love this one.

Great workout - Joyflyer - Townville, SC
While I find the instructor mildly annoying, I LOVE this workout. She covers all parts of the body, so that you feel great afterward. I have a couple of her DVDs, along with several other instructors, that I rotate through. I am always happy when I get to this one.

Power yoga - Joseph L. Eversole - Chicago IL
Everything is perfect. I got exactly what i wanted. I would buy from again. Thanks

Power yoga fat burner - Melania Lopez - San José, Costa Rica
This video is just too fast-paced. I've done (and like) other power yoga videos which are not slow, but this is almost aerobics, no holding of any pose at any time.
You do break a sweat for sure though, but I'd rather then just go for a run...

Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga Specialist Training

What should be included within a prenatal and postnatal Yoga teacher training? It is agreed that anyone, who decides to become a prenatal Yoga specialist, should be a competent and certified teacher to start with. If the specialist has a medical background, this is a "big plus," as well.

When deciding to take the journey of education toward prenatal Yoga certification, one should consider the amount of continuing education involved. Much like all the specialist branches of Yoga, there is more knowledge than most of us can absorb within one life time.

At the same time, it should be recognized that prenatal and postnatal knowledge is constantly changing and improving. Since the Internet is readily accessible to a large population, knowledge is being shared in an instant.

This instant access can make it confusing at times, because we can also be sorting through erroneous information, which is wasting our time. Therefore, we have to filter information from reliable sources. Unfortunately, all of the answers to prenatal or postnatal health, cannot be found in one document, DVD, CD, certification, or a prenatal Yoga teacher course.

As a result, Yoga teachers, who teach pregnant students, must continue their educations for life. There are a number of factors to consider, within any prenatal course; but Yoga teachers who decide to pursue this path, should consider the following subjects when teaching students who are pregnant.

I. Dietary information that will benefit the mother-to-be and the baby. Much dietary information is common sense. Information about healthy eating is readily available, but we see the results of poor eating habits quite frequently.

II. Asana practices, that can be modified for each trimester. Within each trimester, postures will have to be modified. There is a misconception that the first trimester requires no safety measures. In a nutshell, during each trimester, there are specific safety precautions.

III. Meditation practices, which may be adjusted for each trimester. To focus on good thoughts is a wonderful practice for mother and child. Good mental and emotional health of the mother is critical to the baby's overall health.

IV. Pranayama (Yogic breathing techniques), which may change during the course of pregnancy. Pranayama techniques have specific roles during pregnancy and labor. Some of the relaxing Pranayama techniques can be practiced anywhere and at any time.

V. Relaxation techniques, which can help an expectant mother throughout pregnancy. As mentioned above, controlled breathing is a major part of relaxation, but stage-by-stage, or body scan relaxation sessions, are healthy practices for mother and child.

Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga ~ Short Forms with Jennifer Wolfe Review

This video was hands down the best purchase I made during my entire pregnancy.

I wanted to be "in training" during my pregnancy, as I was hoping for a natural childbirth. Unable to find prenatal classes that worked with my schedule, I listened to the numerous positive reviews for Jennifer Wolfe's videos, and I bought them during my first trimester.

My fitness background: I regularly use other ashtanga and vinyasa yoga videos, and I consider myself to be at an intermediate/advanced fitness level... probably intermediate when it comes to yoga.

I LOVED doing this video. I did either the 30 min or 45 min workout almost every day throughout my entire pregnancy (all 42 weeks of it!) Jennifer's teaching style and cues are great- I found her really pleasant, calming, and easy to follow. I felt as though she knew exactly what my muscles were craving- my husband laughed at all of my "mmmmmms" and "ahhhhhs" while I was working out.

This workout kept me sane and energetic. The modifications for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester were perfect for how I felt during each phase of my pregnancy. I definitely felt a big boost in my mental and physical state on days I did this video.

Obviously feeling good during pregnancy is important, but the strength it gave me during my childbirth experience was priceless. I DID have my natural childbirth, complete with 6.5 hours of pushing. My (highly sought-after) OB now tells all of his patients to use Jennifer Wolfe's yoga DVDs!

Why Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga & Who is Jennifer Wolfe?
*****************

What is Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga?
Whether you're a yoga veteran in search of an active yoga routine, or you're new to yoga, Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga gives you all the tools to make your pregnancy journey the best it can be. Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga is your support system leading to a more comfortable pregnancy, quicker and less painful labor, and a speedier postpartum recovery.

Jennifer Wolfe developed Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga during her own pregnancy when she realized that all styles of prenatal yoga offered, at the time, could not adequately prepare her physically and mentally for labor. She wanted a yoga practice that specifically served the needs of the pregnant woman: one that actively prepares women for the marathon event of childbirth, while helping women discover their power and inner strength needed during this transformative period in their lives.

Jennifer Wolfe found these empowering and strengthening qualities in the soft flow of Vinyasa Yoga. In her DVDs, she adapts Vinyasa Yoga for the unique needs of pregnant women, providing a system that works with your body without sacrificing the intensity necessary to prepare for childbirth. By learning to link your breath and movements in a constant flow, you'll increase your ability to work with your body during labor and childbirth, reducing the need for medications or other interventions; including a decrease in the need for C-sections.

I use this everyday! - Lynleigh S. Palmer -
I am an advanced exerciser who prior to this pregnancy had started to enjoy vinyasa style yoga. So, when I stumbled upon this video after finding out I was pregnant with my second child, I was excited and ordered it immediately.

There are 3 workouts (15 min, 30 min and 45 min). All of the workouts are wonderful. They are intense and yet so relaxing. I primarily use the 30 minute workout before I go to bed. I have other prenatal yoga workouts but have only used this prenatal yoga dvd during this pregnancy.

At 32 weeks pregnant, I am still using this dvd daily and hope to be able to use it through the rest of my pregnancy.

Worthless - Janice Schwarz - United States
This woman went to the double espresso school of yoga. She zips through the forms rather than having you hold them. Further, you also spend a LOT of time upside down, specifically in downward dog.

For someone claiming to be a doula and to have all this experience working with pregnant women, she should know that all being upside down accomplishes is having baby crammed into your lungs. That is not especially conducive to breathing. Further, she doesn't give you time to get INTO a new pose. When a woman is in her 3rd trimester, there is no zipping through the forms the way she does.

One time she had a 3rd trimester woman adjust a form for a lunge by dropping her knee. Er...that's not a complicated pose even in 3rd trimester. However, a downward dog that is more of a flat back than a downward dog would be a better modification.

Admittedly, the problem may be that perhaps I'm not aware of what Vinyasa means. Probably something like "really fast".

After getting annoyed with the 15 minute workout, I watched some of the workouts and then gave up. I'm sending this one back.

Fantastic! Highly recommend - Yogini mama - Pennsylvania, USA
As a yoga teacher, I found this to be the best prenatal yoga dvd out there; knowledgeable. well paced. good cues and modifications. I absolutely recommend it!
