Yoga Instructor Training - Yoga for Arthritis

There are several conditions, classified under the heading of arthritis, which all involve joint pain. Studies reveal that yoga can cause significant relief from this debilitating condition.

Although anyone with arthritis will tell you, that to move at all, sometimes hurts, remaining completely sedentary is not healthy either. Arthritis patients are encouraged by their doctors to participate in low impact exercises to improve movement.

Many higher impact activities can cause further damage and discomfort. As a result of this, yoga has increased in popularity, among doctors and patients, alike.

Studies have shown the importance of moving affected arthritic joints. Doing so has significant long-term effects on relief of pain and increase in mobility. Exercising the joint has the overall benefit of health for the entire body.

Movement of the body is necessary to provide essential nutrients to joints and circulation to muscles. Yoga is the best activity there is to strengthen, nourish and heal, the body with arthritis.

Before you begin to work with any student that has arthritis, understand their reluctance to move. The pain can be excruciating, and it will take time and patience to improve.

There must be patience, both on behalf of the patient, and you, as the instructor. Never force a student, with arthritis, to push past the point of pain. The student must keep pushing their limits, but never force the arthritic joint. This could cause damage of the joint.

Arthritis is the number one cause of disability in people over fifty-five. People as young as 20 years of age are also affected, with rare cases of children having some form of arthritis. Scientific studies have been sparse in the past, though plenty of real life evidence is prevalent anywhere you look.

These early studies show promising improvement in joint health, physical mobility and mental and emotional health. That is reason enough for many to try yoga for their arthritis. This is why we are seeing a heavy increase of students with arthritis.

Gentle Vinyasa Yoga; Beginner & Intermediate; a ***Practice DVD*** Review



This is a truly inspirational vinyasa DVD. It is so beautiful both visually and auditorially. It really puts me in a good space when I use this DVD. The instructional option for the sound track is really nice (you choose instructional or pose timing, a really great feature). Jyl's voice is really pleasant. She is so encouraging and soothing. The yoga is a gentle Ashtanga practice that has removed most of the difficult poses (for me) and is about 1 hour long. So, you start with seated meditation and then do a few sun salutation warm ups and the do the triangle pose and reverse triangle pose hip openers, and then the hamstring stretch pose, and then a some balancing poses (this is gentle but balancing is a bit challenging for me , which I like), and then the feet spread wide pose, and then the poses start to proceed towards the floor to stretch everything out and then ending with savasana. The multiple music options is realy great and they are all such beautiful musicians. I really recommend you gets this DVD. It is such a different experience from the other types of DVDs where you hear the instructor and not much in the way of inspirational music, over and over.

nice yoga practice - On the hill - Richmond KY USA
I really like this DVD. It is not to hard at all. It is perfect when you really don't want to do a hard practice!It maybe for beginners but I think seasoned yogis will like it to! You will feel very refreshed and relaxed when done.

Not what I expected. And there were some issues. - Elizabeth Armenta - Dallas, TX
I was very much looking forward to this DVD. I was expecting a gentle, flowing yoga practice that was relaxing and meditative. It really wasn't that. It was a hard yoga practice, that just moved slowly. She holds the poses a long while, a little too slow for my taste. I got bored, and found it very difficult, which made me frustrated. Others may love this though.

It was beautifully shot, and beautifully done. If you like to hold poses for quite a while, I would recommend trying this DVD. I don't know that it's really appropriate for beginners though? It was challenging to hold the poses for that long. And some of the poses were pretty hard, although she often gave a modification. I think a beginner would be frustrated. I consider myself an intermediate and I was a bit frustrated.

A couple problems I saw:

1. There were a couple times I noticed when she would hold a pose on one side MUCH longer than on the other. 2-3 times longer in some cases. This didn't seem to happen too often, but it happened.

2. Sometimes I could not hear her words over the music. I was using the detailed instruction. This was frustrating at times. Turning up the volume wouldn't help, because it would just make the music louder too. Dubbing problem I guess.

All in all, I do think this is a very nice yoga DVD. The choice of music is nice as well. The instructor's voice is soothing. The practice just was not for me.

I loved the beginning of this practice but as it moved on, I discovered that it was not for me. There was too much forward folding for my personality, I was in a pretty bad mood for most of the morning after this practice. I don't think there was enough heart opening to counteract all of the forward folding. So, I would not recommend this for someone who has a tendency towards depression or feeling low. Vinyasa normally puts me in a fantastic frame of mind and this practice did just the opposite. I also felt that some of the poses were not balanced. Like in warrior, it seemed that we were on the left side much longer than on the right and this happened with a few of the poses. I also felt that there was a lack of twisting asanas.

I did like the scenery and felt that the people in the video were inspiring. I have another DVD by Jennifer that I have not tried and am hoping for better results.

And one last thing, I would not recommend this to someone just starting out in yoga for a couple of reasons. There is heavy use of Sanskrit without much explanation and secondly, I don't feel that some of the poses are for beginners. Mainly, shoulder stand which can cause very serious injury if you don't know what you are doing or if you don't have a live human there to help you.

This is a very easy workout that seems to get just about every muscle in my body moving. Disappointed - Chilipod - NM USA
Following a recommendation, I bought this DVD to aid me (a senior) in becoming more fit without hurting myself. I'm sure this is an excellent fitness program - if you have a physical handicap, chronic illness or disability. It is a limited exercise program and perhaps needs to be described as that to prevent other seniors from buying it who want a thorough overall workout program. While doing it the first (& only) time I felt I should be at least 20 years older (very elderly!) or seriously injured or disabled. Very disapointing & waste of money for me.
